Book Description
The 21st century has been described as the "Asian Century." Home to 60 per cent of the world's population and accounting for one-fourth of its Gross Domestic Product, by 2050, Asia will also have three of the worlds largest economies-China, India, and Japan. A dynamic hub in this rising Asia is the Southeast Asian region encompassing diverse countries, peoples and cultures. The 9th Asian Security Conference, organized in February 2007, addressed a range of issues and trends affecting this crucial region and their implications for regional and Asian security. The conference, titled Changing Security Dynamics in South East Asia deliberated on Southeast Asian perspectives on security, the role of external powers both current and also those that were rising, the problems of religious fundamentalism and terrorism, the challenges of maritime cooperation among countries abutting crucial world energy transit routes, the advantages of regional, multilateral organizations in fostering cooperative behaviours, and India's growing role and stakes in this region. The contributors point out that the primary security concerns confronting the region were often internal in nature. On the external front, they note the changing geo-political situation'due to the rise of China, a revitalized Japan, a more active Indian presence, along with the continued primacy of the United States. Stressing that these changes were accompanied by their own sets of opportunities and challenges, they express confidence in the ability of regional organizations like the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to deal with the challenges. India and the countries of Southeast Asia have a rich shared history. New Delhi's policy initiatives like the 'Look East's policy have also deepened its economic and security links with the region. Contributors examine different aspects of this growing and multi-faceted relationship, including in meeting the common challenges of energy security, humanitarian and disaster relief, combating trans-national terrorism, among other issues. We hope that this book will contribute to a better understanding of the changing security dynamics in Southeast Asia.

Book Description
The topic of this book deals with a highly relevant empirical issue: East asian security and the dynamics of the respective governance structure or architecture are not only of regional but of global concern. Since the pivot of the American pivot to East Asia and other external actor ́s responses to it the security architecture has changed in form, size and function. In order to analyze and explain these changes, hypotheses derived from IR middle range theories (i.e. soft and hard balancing) will be applied to cases of bilateral and multilateral security governance in East Asia.

Book Description
This work studies the non-traditional security agenda in the Asia-Pacific, focusing particularly on the dynamics of securitisation. It questions why and how some issues are securitised and examines the policy outcomes that derive from securitising these concerns. The conceptual discussion draws upon but also modifies the theory of securitisation and desecuritisation originally advanced by the Copenhagen School. The empirical study analyses Thailand's securitisation of drug trafficking, Singapore's combined securitisation of sea piracy and maritime terrorism, and Australia's securitisation of people smuggling. These various issues can be defined as forms of transnational crime. The case studies consider the rhetoric used by the three countries concerned as well as their policy responses at the unilateral, bilateral and multilateral level. READERSHIP: Academics, policy-makers and administrators, and those interested in the study of regionalism and regional security.

Book Description
Japan in a Dynamic Asia examines a new phenomenon in Japanese foreign policy: Japan's increasing activism under the Koizumi administration. Behind this policy shift are the end of the Cold War, drastic growth of China, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and new transnational security threats. This book updates our understanding of Japan's rapidly changing foreign policies in the contexts of the new regional power balance and security concerns. Unlike most books on Japanese foreign policy, which focus mainly on U.S.-Japan relations, this book analyzes Japan's relations with individual Asian countries and sub-regions. The role of the United States - when relevant - is discussed in the contexts of these bilateral and multilateral relations. Editors Yoichiro Sato and Satu Limaye have gathered an impressive array of essays that will interest students of Japanese politics, foreign policy, and international relations in the Asia-Pacific region.
