Book Description
“An original and impressively assured debut. A gem of a novel.” —Graeme Simsion, New York Times bestselling author of The Rosie Project A soaring, heartfelt debut following fifty-five days in the life of ten-year-old Rae, who must look after herself and her dog when her mother disappears. For as long as Rae can remember, it's been her and Mum, and their dog, Splinter; a small, deliberately unremarkable, family. They have their walks, their cooking routines, their home. Sometimes Mum disappears for a while to clear her head but Rae is okay with this because Mum always comes back. So, when Rae wakes to Splinter's nose in her face, the back door open, and no Mum, she does as she’s always done and carries on. She tends to the house, goes to school, walks Splinter, and minds her own business—all the while pushing down the truth she isn't ready to face. That is, until her grumpy, lonely neighbor Lettie—with her own secrets and sadness—falls one night and needs Rae's help. As the two begin to rely on each other, Rae's anxiety intensifies as she wonders what will happen to her when her mother's absence is finally noticed and her fragile world bursts open. A Million Things transforms a gut-wrenching story of abandonment and what it's like to grow up in a house that doesn't feel safe into an astonishing portrait of resilience, mental health, and the families we make and how they make us in return.

Book Description
Central Works of Philosophy is a five-volume collection of essays on the core texts of the Western philosophical canon over 2,500 years. These books offer remarkable insights into the ideas out of which our present ways of thinking emerged and without which they cannot fully be understood. Volume 3 introduces readers to the age of idealism, from which twentieth-century Western philosophy emerged. The volume begins with Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. By arguing for transcendental idealism, Kant's magnum opus not only initiated significant and turbulent philosophical activity but determined much of the course of nineteenth-century philosophy. This is followed by an exploration of the works of two post-Kantian idealists, Fichte's Science of Knowledge and Hegel's monumental Phenomenology of Spirit. Schopenhauer's masterpiece, The World as Will and Representation, which hoped to rectify deficiencies in Kant's philosophy, is discussed, as is Kierkegaard's Philosophical Fragments. Marx's Capital, one of the most influential books of the modern age, and Nietzche's On the Genealogy of Morals, his most philosophically systematic and accessible work on ethics, are also examined. The volume ends with the moral and political philosophy of John Stuart Mill, perhaps the only philosopher in this collection to evade Kant's influence. Central Works of Philosophy is aimed at the undergraduate student and general reader. The essays provide both an overview of the work and clear and authoritative exposition of its central ideas, giving readers the resources and confidence to read the works themselves. Book jacket.

Book Description
Jean-Jacques von Allmen’s work was animated by three key insights: the Church both learns and becomes what it truly is when it gathers to worship; worship tells the story of God’s salvation history and invites God’s people into it; and by doing so, the church offers the world both a stern warning and a hopeful promise. The Swiss Reformed pastor and professor is among the most admired liturgical theologians of the twentieth century, but his work is largely and lamentably unknown to most worship leaders. In Church at Church, Ron Rienstra provides an introduction to this important thinker. He offers methodological and biographical context and then explores von Allmen’s most generative insights concerning the church as it engages in its most foundational activity: worship. Viewed through the lens of the Nicene marks, Rienstra’s exploration yields the outlines of a ‘liturgical ecclesiology’, a way to help the church think more deeply about its identity and to help its leaders shape the worship they prepare and lead today.

Book Description
After a slow incubation period of nearly 15 years, a large and growing number of organizations now have one or more projects using the Semantic Web stack of technologies. The Web Ontology Language (OWL) is an essential ingredient in this stack, and the need for ontologists is increasing faster than the number and variety of available resources for learning OWL. This is especially true for the primary target audience for this book: modelers who want to build OWL ontologies for practical use in enterprise and government settings. The purpose of this book is to speed up the process of learning and mastering OWL. To that end, the focus is on the 30% of OWL that gets used 90% of the time. Others who may benefit from this book include technically oriented managers, semantic technology developers, undergraduate and post-graduate students, and finally, instructors looking for new ways to explain OWL. The book unfolds in a spiral manner, starting with the core ideas. Each subsequent cycle reinforces and expands on what has been learned in prior cycles and introduces new related ideas. Part 1 is a cook's tour of ontology and OWL, giving an informal overview of what things need to be said to build an ontology, followed by a detailed look at how to say them in OWL. This is illustrated using a healthcare example. Part 1 concludes with an explanation of some foundational ideas about meaning and semantics to prepare the reader for subsequent chapters. Part 2 goes into depth on properties and classes, which are the core of OWL. There are detailed descriptions of the main constructs that you are likely to need in every day modeling, including what inferences are sanctioned. Each is illustrated with real-world examples. Part 3 explains and illustrates how to put OWL into practice, using examples in healthcare, collateral, and financial transactions. A small ontology is described for each, along with some key inferences. Key limitations of OWL are identified, along with possible workarounds. The final chapter gives a variety of practical tips and guidelines to send the reader on their way.
