The studies in this book focus on Italian twentieth-century architecture, in particular design and construction techniques. The descriptions of the worksites and building processes provide a much better and clearer picture of the different modernist styles that existed in Italy; they also reveal the ‘thin red line' that characterised an univocal construction method: mixed masonry enriched (and not replaced) by reinforced concrete – a technique well suited to small artisanal worksites. This was a mild version of modern construction, in line with the role construction played in slowing down an industrialisation process which in Italy was, in itself, slow. Each chapter illustrates a specific aspect of the history of construction and highlights several new issues involving architecture in general: the important tectonic similarities which one way or another link the Littorio style and the several different kinds of rationalisms in the thirties; the continuity between the autarchic experimentation and the techniques used in reconstruction; the connection between the large-scale works designed by engineers and the architectures of the fifties and sixties, which now appear to be one of the mainstays of the unique Italian Style.

The present doctoral thesis was developed within the framework of the research project "Deformation Capacity of Structural Concrete". This project aims at developing a consistent and experimentally verified theory of the deformation capacity of structural concrete. Previous work included the development of a theoretical model, the so-called Tension Chord Model, which allows a comprehensive description of the load-deforma tion behaviour of tension members in non-prestressed and prestressed concrete struc tures. The present work focuses on a new theoretical model, the so-called Cracked Mem brane Model. For members subjected to in-plane forces this new model combines the ba sic concepts of the modified compression field theory and the tension chord model. Crack spacings and tension stiffening effects in cracked membranes are determined from first principles and the link to plasticity theory methods is maintained since equilibrium conditions are formulated in terms of stresses at the cracks rather than average stresses between the cracks. The research project "Deformation Capacity of Structural Concrete" has been funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Association of the Swiss Cement Pro ducers. Physical models have been, and continue to be used by engineers when faced with unprecedented challenges, when engineering science has been non-existent or inadequate, and in any other situation when the engineer has needed to raise their confidence in a design proposal to a sufficient level to begin construction. For this reason, models have mostly been used by designers and constructors of highly innovative projects, when previous experience has not been available. The book covers the history of using of physical models in the design and development of civil and building engineering projects including bridges in the mid-18th century, William Fairbairn?s Britannia bridge in the 1840s, the masonry Aswan Dam in the 1890s, concrete dams in the 1920s, thin concrete shell roofs and the dynamic behaviour of tall buildings in earthquakes from the 1930s, tidal flow in estuaries and the acoustics of concert halls from the 1950s, and cable-net and membrane structures in the 1960s. Traditionally, progress in engineering has been attributed to the creation and use of engineering science, the understanding materials properties and the development of new construction methods. The book argues that the use of reduced scale models have played an equally important part in the development of civil and building engineering. However, like the history of engineering design itself, this crucial contribution has not been widely reported or celebrated. The book concludes with reviews of the current use of physical models alongside computer models, for example, in boundary layer wind tunnels, room acoustics, seismic engineering, hydrology, and air flow in buildings.
