Book Description
At the beginning of 2002 a new data taking with an upgraded trigger system started for the CDF collaboration. One of the major improvements is the track trigger. A fast processor reconstructs tracks in the central drift chamber and the Silicon Vertex Tracker combines these tracks with the silicon vertex detector information to have track parameters with a precision as good as the offine reconstruction. This system allows CDF to trigger on tracks significantly displaced from the primary vertex with high efficiency for signal events like charm and beauty and to keep low background rates. The performances, in terms of resolution and efficiency, of both the processors are illustrated and the firsts physics results are discussed.

Book Description
The CDF experiment's Silicon Vertex Trigger is a system of 150 custom 9U VME boards that reconstructs axial tracks in the CDF silicon strip detector in a 15[mu]sec pipeline. SVT's 35[mu]m impact parameter resolution enables CDF's Level 2 trigger to distinguish primary and secondary particles, and hence to collect large samples of hadronic bottom and charm decays. We review some of SVT's key design features. Speed is achieved with custom VLSI pattern recognition, linearized track fitting, pipelining, and parallel processing. Testing and reliability are aided by built-in logic state analysis and test-data sourcing at each board's input and output, a common inter-board data link, and a universal ''Merger'' board for data fan-in/fan-out. Speed and adaptability are enhanced by use of modern FPGAs.

Book Description
In the post era of the Z and W discovery, after the observation of Jets at UA1 and UA2 at CERN, John Ellis visioned at a HEP conference at Lake Tahoe, California in 1983 “To proceed with high energy particle physics, one has to tag the avour of the quarks!” This statement re ects the need for a highly precise tracking device, being able to resolve secondary and tertiary vertices within high-particle densities. Since the d- tance between the primary interaction point and the secondary vertex is proportional tothelifetimeoftheparticipatingparticle,itisanexcellentquantitytoidentifypar- cle avour in a very fast and precise way. In colliding beam experiments this method was applied especially to tag the presence of b quarks within particle jets. It was rst introduced in the DELPHI experiment at LEP but soon followed by all collider - periments to date. The long expected t quark discovery was possible mainly with the help of the CDF silicon vertex tracker, providing the b quark information. In the beginning of the 21st century the new LHC experiments are beginning to take 2 shape. CMS with its 206m of silicon area is perfectly suited to cope with the high luminosity environment. Even larger detectors are envisioned for the far future, like the SiLC project for the International Linear Collider. Silicon sensors matured from small 1in. single-sided devices to large 6in. double-sided, double metal detectors and to 6in. single-sided radiation hard sensors.

Book Description
This book contains the lecture courses conducted at the School of the Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (TASI, Colorado, USA) on Elementary Particle Physics in 2002. In this School, three series of lectures are presented in parallel in the area of phenomenology, TeV-scale physics, and astroparticles physics. The phenomenology lecture series covered a broad spectrum of standard research techniques used to interpret present day and future collider data. The TeV-scale physics lecture series focused on modern speculations about physics beyond the Standard Model, with an emphasis on supersymmetry and extra-dimensional theories. The lecture series on astroparticle physics treated recent developments in theories of dark matter and dark energy, the cosmic microwave background, and prospects for the upcoming era of gravitational wave astronomy. Contents: Phenomenology Lecture Series: Neutrinos (Y Grossman); Precision Electroweak Physics (K Matchev); Effective Field Theories (I Z Rothstein); Bottom Quark Physics and the Heavy Quark Expansion (M Luke); The Top Quark, QCD and New Physics (S Dawson); Tevatron Physics (J Womersley); TeV-Scale Physics Lecture Series: Non-Perturbative Sypersymmetry (J Terning); New Directions for New Dimensions: KaluzaOCoKlein Theory, Large Extra Dimensions and the Brane World (K R Dienes); New Ideas in Symmetry Breaking (M Quiros); Extra Dimensions and Branes (C Csaki); Astroparticle Physics Lecture Series: Introduction to Cosmology (M Trodden & S M Carroll); Dark Matter (K A Olive); Gravitational Waves from the Early Universe (A Buonanno). Readership: Researchers, academics and graduate students in high energy physics, mathematical physics and astrophysics."

Book Description
The exploration of the subnuclear world is done through increasingly complex experiments covering a wide range of energy and performed in a large variety of environments ranging from particle accelerators, underground detectors to satellites and the space laboratory. The achievement of these research programs calls for novel techniques, new materials and instrumentation to be used in detectors, often of large scale. Therefore, fundamental physics is at the forefront of technological advance and also leads to many applications. Among these, are the progresses from space experiments whose results allow the understanding of the cosmic environment, of the origin and evolution of the universe after the Big Bang.

Book Description
The Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) is the new trigger processor which reconstructs 2-D tracks with high speed and accuracy at the level 2 trigger of the CDFII experiment. SVT allows tagging events with secondary vertices and therefore enhances the CDFII B-physics capability. SVT has been fully assembled and operational since the beginning of Tevatron RunII in April 2001. In this paper we briefly review the SVT design and physics motivation and then describe its performance during the early phase of CDF RunII.
