Book Description
Interest in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is expanding rapidly. Many of those who are interested in ACT are trained using a mechanistic cognitive behavioral therapy model (or MCBT). Utilizing both ACT and MCBT together can be difficult, because the approaches make different philosophical assumptions and have different theoretical models. The core purpose of the book is to help provide a bridge between ACT and MCBT. The emphasis of this book will be applied psychology, but it will also have important theoretical implications. The book will highlight where ACT and MCBT differ in their predictions, and will suggest directions for future research. It will be grounded in current research and will make clear to the reader what is known and what has yet to be tested. The core theme of A CBT-Practitioner's Guide to ACT is that ACT and CBT can be unified if they share the same philosophical underpinnings (functional contextualism) and theoretical orientation (relational frame theory, or RFT). Thus, from a CBT practitioner's perspective, the mechanistic philosophical core of MCBT can be dropped, and the mechanistic information processing theory of CBT can be held lightly and ignored in contexts where it is not useful. From an ACT practitioner's perspective, the decades of CBT research on cognitive schema and dysfunctional beliefs provides useful information about how clients might be cognitively fused and how this fusion might be undermined. The core premise of the book is that CBT and ACT can be beneficially integrated, provided both are approached from a similar philosophical and theoretical framework. The authors acknowledge that practitioners often have little interest in extended discussions of philosophy and theory. Thus, their discussion of functional contextualism and RFT is grounded clearly in clinical practice. They talk about what functional contextualism means for the practitioner in the room, with a particular client. They describe how RFT can help the practitioner to understand the barriers to effective client action.

Book Description
"People who have experienced a traumatic event may feel a wide range of emotions, such as anxiety, anger, fear, and depression. The truth is that there is no right or wrong way to react to trauma; but there are ways that they can heal from experience, and uncover their own capacity for resilience, growth, and recovery. Psychotherapy is a crucial component of mental health treatment. As the field continues to grow, different modalities of therapy have emerged. These specific types of therapy are often referred to by acronyms, which can lead to some confusion. Three of the most common approaches are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These different therapy techniques were developed for the treatment of specific disorders, however there is overlap among them and many practitioners utilize a combination of these. The most commonly used form of psychotherapy today is cognitive behavioral therapy. The basic theme of this form of therapy is often illustrated by a triangle which connects thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The idea is that one of these inevitably leads to the others and that understanding how these are connected can bring about changes in each area. For example, patterns of unhealthy behaviors can be broken by recognizing and changing certain thoughts and feelings. Or, changing certain behaviors and patterns of thinking can improve the way one feels. CBT is widely used to treat a variety of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and schizophrenia. Dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, is a form of psychotherapy born out of CBT. It was originally developed to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder, but is now widely used to treat depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, PTSD and substance abuse. There are four main tenets or areas of focus in DBT. These are mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. In contrast to CBT, which is done on an individual level, part of DBT includes group therapy. A third form of psychotherapy, which is slightly less common, is ACT. Acceptance and commitment therapy has been shown to be useful in the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, psychosis and addiction. The goal of this treatment is acceptance of life’s difficulties. The six core principles are cognitive defusion, acceptance, contact with the present moment, the observing self, values, and committed action. The acronym 'ACT' can also be used to describe the therapy as 'Accept your reactions and be present', 'Choose a valued direction', and 'Take action.' These are just a few of the many modalities utilized in psychotherapy. Determining which therapy is best for you depends on your individual case, your treatment goals, your history and personality."--Amazon.com.

Book Description
Do you have unbearably low self-esteem? Sometimes shyness paralyzes you and prevents you from doing even the most trivial things. Have you tried to overcome shyness, but always end up feeling that you are worth nothing to anyone, even when your family or friends tell you otherwise? ♥ 3 books in 1 ♥ This collection includes: 1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.2. Dialectical Behavior Therapy.3. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Our self-esteem depends very much on the experiences we had in the first years of life. If the relationships with the people who looked after us (parents, grandparents, teachers, etc.) were positive and rewarding, we have likely developed a positive image of ourselves. However, emotionally unstable, offensive and toxic role models can undermine the construction of a solid self-esteem before it has completely consolidated within us. Many of us are still limited by the defences we formed when trying to protect ourselves from the painful circumstances in which we found ourselves as children. Disappointment in love and failures resulting from unrealistic goals can, in such circumstances, easily convince you that you are a useless or inferior person. Here, however, is the good news: There is nothing wrong with you. You already have everything you need to live the life you want on your terms. This collection offers you all the tools to eradicate the negative programming and erroneous thinking that has been given to you, allowing you to release the incredible power that all of us have within. With this collection you will learn: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - this technique will teach you how to challenge (and defeat) negative and automatic thoughts, understand how mental patterns are established and block vicious circles. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) - This method was originally created to treat individuals who struggle with suicidal thoughts, but has matured into a treatment for many other conditions that involve dysfunctional emotional regulation. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - This therapy focuses on the problem of human suffering - an important factor in achieving a good life. It also has the capability to successfully deal with much deeper issues. Step-by-step exercises that illustrate exactly how the tools in this book can help you make positive changes. You may find yourself talking to yourself in these terms: There is nothing that I really like about myself. Only others manage to feel good about themselves. I am not worthy to look for the things that interest me. Others are more deserving of happiness. Nobody wants to hear about my life or the problems I'm facing. It's all my fault, I can't find people who are good to me. Good people would never be with someone like me. or "I feel stupid" "People will think that I'm just silly." "It is useless for me to try because I am always wrong. I am incapable." "Maybe my husband is right and I am good for nothing." Do these thoughts sound familiar to you? Over time, negative thoughts can become so frequent that the individual ends up living them as facts. It creates a real vicious circle that is difficult to stop and can prove itself to be dangerous.Nobody is born with high self-esteem: we have to build it. It is never too late to change and free yourself from negativity. Building self-esteem can be a difficult process, but it's worth it!

Book Description
As a mental health professional, it can be difficult to help anxious clients face their fears and anxieties. Exposure therapy is widely appreciated as one of the most effective therapeutic treatments for anxiety spectrum disorders; however, it is often underutilized due to problems that present themselves during treatment, such as client unwillingness or hesitancy, or a lack of understanding on the professional’s part regarding targeted applications. The Clinician's Guide to Exposure Therapies for Anxiety Spectrum Disorders offers guidance in creating specific exposure exercises for clients’ individual fears and phobias, as well as tools to help you and your clients overcome common roadblocks that arise during exposure therapy. In addition, this clinician’s guide presents detailed solutions and specific exposure strategies for the most common fears and phobias clients experience. You will learn to implement exposure therapy and integrate it with other evidence-based practices, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). The book also includes reproducible worksheets you can use to help clients develop hierarchies of exposure and information about using prolonged exposure therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. If you are looking for a powerful resource for treating anxiety disorders, this is it.

Book Description
Clinicians know that mental health disorders in adolescents may manifest externally as aggressiveness, opposition, or isolation from others. What’s less clear is just how to move beyond these conduct and defiance issues to help teenage clients cooperate with treatment so they can build healthy social skills and values. Mode Deactivation Therapy for Treating Aggression and Oppositional Behavior in Adolescents combines the most effective aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP) to meet the specific challenges of therapists working with angry, distrustful, or hostile adolescents. This evidence-based treatment program is effective with the most difficult-to-treat adolescents, especially those who struggle with anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. Complete with assessments and client worksheets, this approach encourages young clients to see alternatives to their antisocial core beliefs and equips them with skills for gaining control of their emotions and oppositional behavior. The skills these clients learn will be useful long after adolescence, and can redirect their lives dramatically.
