The debate over whether class size matters for teaching and learning is one of the most enduring, and aggressive, in education research. Teachers often insist that small classes benefit their work. But many experts argue that evidence from research shows class size has little impact on pupil outcomes, so does not matter, and this dominant view has informed policymaking internationally. Here, the lead researchers on the world’s biggest study into class size effects present a counter-argument. Through detailed analysis of the complex relations involved in the classroom they reveal the mechanisms that support teachers’ experience, and conclude that class size matters very much indeed. Drawing on 20 years of systematic classroom observations, surveys of practitioners, detailed case studies and extensive reviews of research, Peter Blatchford and Anthony Russell contend that common ways of researching the impact of class size are limited and sometimes misguided. While class size may have no direct effect on pupil outcomes, it has, they say, significant force through interconnections with classroom processes. Members of minority groups are often the victim of stereotyping, apparently much more so than members of majority groups. Moreover, stereotypes about minorities seem particularly hard to change, even when minority individuals disconfirm their group's stereotypes. The goals of this dissertation are to test whether the stereotypes people form about smaller (i.e., minority) groups are stronger than those about larger (i.e., majority) groups and to assess whether a cognitive model of category learning can account for the formation of different stereotypes on the basis of group size. Drawing on Kruschke's attention theory (1996, 2001, 2003), I propose that people tend to learn first about majority groups compared to minority groups, because they are exposed more often to members of the former compared to the latter. This difference in learning order causes people's attention to focus on the features of minority groups that most differentiate them from majority groups. As a result, unique minority features are highlighted, contributing to the formation of stronger minority stereotypes. Overall, the results from four experiments support this model, showing that the stereotypes people form about smaller groups tend to be stronger, to have more predictive power, and to be more resistant to change in the face of disconfirming evidence. In addition, people are more likely to hold essentialist beliefs about minority compared to majority groups and to dismiss minority members who disconfirm their group's stereotypes as atypical group members. More research is needed to explore the implications of these results and I believe that, in real-life, disparities between minority and majority stereotypes are co-determined by individual, social, and cultural factors. Nonetheless, the findings of this dissertation indicate that the basic cognitive mechanisms involved in the process of category learning are sufficient to account for the formation of stronger stereotypes for minority compared to majority groups.
