Excerpt from Catalogue of Scientific Papers, Vol. 9: 1874-1883 The numbering of the titles of the papers of each Author whose name does not now appear for the first time is consecutive with that in former volumes. Although the abbreviations of the titles of the various periodicals from which the list has been compiled are in most instances so clear as to speak for themselves, and although but very slight alterations in the form of any of them have been made, it has been thought advisable to amalgamate the Lists of Abbreviations that have appeared in former volumes, and to prefix to this Third Series a complete list of the works from which it has been compiled and of the abbreviated forms under which reference to them is made. The list thus formed by no means comprises the whole of the scientific periodicals which at the present day are being constantly published in various languages; but the President and Council have it in contemplation to issue a Supplementary volume, in which will be catalogued all the most important papers that have appeared from 1800 to 1883 in periodicals not hitherto indexed.
