Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Etchings and Dry-Points It is significant that there should be associated with his (brief) career in the government service at Washington a certain Coast Survey plate on which he etched a number of loosely drawn heads, showing, even at that early age and with all his inherited respect for the traditions of the place, a characteristic disregard of or indifference to offi cial decorum. In short, the spirit of the etcher had to come out, the happy moment for seizing a congenial subject could not be permitted to pass, no matter what suffered, or, from the official point of view, was disfigured. But when as a young man he definitively embraced the career of an artist and began his studies in the atelier of Gleyre, it was not with the etching needle alone that he proposed to make his way. On the contrary, he seems to have had quite as much enthusiasm for the brush, and, in fact, he remained ever after a practitioner of both arts. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of Etchings and Dry Points by Rembrandt: Selected for the Exhibition at the Grolier Club of the City of New York, April-May, 1900 The purpose of the present exhibition is to show fine impressions of as many as possible of the important examples of the etched work of Rembrandt, and to illustrate adequately both his range and power in etching. It is not for lack of material that the display is limited in numbers. While a complete exhibition of original impressions is impossible, yet from the private collections generously placed at the service of the Club, a more extended exhibition could have been made. The result, however, would not have been more representative of the artist's work. As is generally known, wide differences of opinion exist among recognized authorities concerning the genuineness of certain prints attributed to Rembrandt. The discussion which has followed the agitation of the subject by Sir Francis Seymour Haden, has led to the definite exclusion of a large number of etchings included in the earlier catalogues. Regarding others, the work of investigation and criticism still continues. Bartsch, in 1797, placed the total number of etchings and dry points by Rembrandt at 375. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Etchings, Dry-Points and Mezzotints: October 4 to October 31, 1910 It is extraordinary how a busy London surgeon should surpass the professional artists in their own specialty, but this is what Seymour Haden certainly did. Being a man of very wide artistic knowledge it must not be supposed that he was ignorant of the fine quality of his own works. He judged them with the same impartiality with which he would have judged the etchings of Rem brandt. I well remember Seymour Haden saying to me, in allusion to his drypoint, the Sunset in Ireland: That is the print which will fetch an enormous price in the centuries to come. Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Etchings and Dry-Points by Whistler: With an Introduction and Notes As all these methods are now considered to be within the province of etching, it would be well to consider for a moment the limitations and scope of the art as the masters have under stood them. Etching'is a means of expressing on a plate, the most delicate, the most subtle, the most refined sensations which come to an artist, provided always he can perceive them and has the ability to record them. N 0 one but an artist can do this, and how many artists are there in the world? Etching is sketching on a plate, and how many modern plates prove the artist can sketch? Etching is putting down a subject in the fewest and the most vital lines; how many artists think of line at all? Etching means doing all these things and others like them superla tively well with the most obedient tools on the most responsive surfaces of metal, provided the artist has the skill to dominate his subject and use his tools. But if one wishes to know what etching is, look at these prints and numbers more by Whistler. There are etchings in this exhibition that have never been approached by any other artist at any time. To know this is to know etch ing - these prints are the perfect flower of the art - the greatest artist of modern times, the greatest etcher of all time - an American James Abbott mcneill Whistler. Book Description
Excerpt from Etchings Dry Points by Muirhead Bone, 1898-1907, Vol. 1: A Catalogue The first volume of this catalogue records the work of Mr. Bone's first ten years as an etcher, and does not include the plates of 1908. Four subjects published in that year, Arundel, South Coast, East Blatchington, and The New Strand, may be named here. A fifth, the artist's portrait, is first published in this book. Other plates, unfinished, have for the present been laid aside. A brief epitome of this catalogue, down to No. 185, appeared in a provisional form of Vienna in 1906. The order then adopted has been strictly preserved, except in the following cases. Nos. 17 and 19 have been transposed, on the discovery of a state of Distant Dumbarton dated in 1899. Nos. 149 and 150 have been transposed, to restore the order in which these subjects stood in the set of Ten Dry Points, as published; they were unintentionally misplaced in 1906. No. 175 in the present catalogue is a different subject from that described under that number in 1906; Stephen, in Profile was merely fragment of a proof of No. 176 in the first state, and no separate plate corresponding to that title ever existed. Nos. 186 to 225 are now recorded for the first time. The order is chronological, or as nearly so as it could be made with the help of the artist's notes and reminiscences.
