This volume is a result of the need to reflect upon Portugal’s position from the viewpoint of the literary assets imported and exported through translation. It brings together a number of scholars working in the field of Translation Studies directly concerned with the Portuguese cultural system in order to analyse this question from various theoretical perspectives and from case studies of translation flows and movements in Portuguese culture. By Translating Portugal Back and Forth, the articles discuss issues such as: how can one draw the borderline between a peripheral and a semi-peripheral system? Is this borderline useful or necessary? Until the latter part of the twentieth century, Italy’s colonial past was a largely neglected topic in historical studies. Before then, only a handful of historians had shown any inclination for rescuing it from the dusty shelves of history, to which it had been relegated. With a few exceptions – most notably Angelo Del Boca – not many had the courage to venture into such treacherous territory. Colonial studies experienced a resurgence at the start of the new millennium, with remarkable progress in the quantity and quality of research, along with the wider public’s newfound interest, as evidenced by an important conference held in Milan in 2006 and the large audience it attracted. This book addresses the relationship between national identity and colonial culture in Italy. The centrality of the construction of Otherness in the identity formation of the colonizer has been extensively reported, both in Europe and elsewhere, and the relevance of colonial heritage has also been attested. In Italy, however, this relationship has been neglected in existing historiography, and the colonial experience has traditionally been side-lined and marginalized. This volume is divided into several sections, each organized around an underlying theme. Within each theme, a broad array of topics and methodologies reflect the authors’ approach in analysing the role of colonialism in the process of Italian identity formation. The rather heterogeneous works contained in this book, which attest the vitality and complexity of the debate on Italian colonialism, are clustered around one central theme: the reconstruction of un-comfortable memories, and a past that will not pass – which overlap the challenging present circumstances of rigidity, racism and rejection. As such, this book is a work of critical reflection, assembled using varied resources and scientific tools in order to shed light on a common past that is still so near and vivid in the minds of Italians, but at the same time so denied, distorted and forgotten in the collective memory.

Nel 1890 fu tra i fondatori della rivista Vita intima, che tuttavia cessò le pubblicazioni l'anno dopo. La sterminata erudizione dell’Imbriani, che nei romanzi è usata per sviare sardonicamente la narrazione, in questa “panzana”, tale è definita dall’autore, è usata per avviare invece la possibilità d’un diverso svolgimento storico, d’un’ucronia. Che il duca Valentino dopo la sconfitta in Italia sia morto in Spagna, è storia solo per chi conosce appena le fonti più note. Per chi come Imbriani è a conoscenza di tante rarità librarie, l’ultima parte di vita di Cesare Borgia ha ben altro esito. Che poi questo scorcio di biblioteca imbrianesca che sorregge la tesi storica, “preborgesianamente”, come è stato detto, mescoli edizioni false ma plausibili a edizioni vere ma improbabili, come può il povero lettore, impotente di fronte a tanto sfoggio di cultura, accorgersene? E così citazione dopo citazione libresca Cesare Borgia raggiunge il nuovo mondo e convince per amore la medusa azteca, la bellissima principessa che pietrifica chiunque la fissi negli occhi, Ciaciunena l’impietratrice, a essere strumento della sua vendetta e cambiare il corso storico delle cose italiane. Ma innamoratosi anche lui, l’audacia e la confidenza che anche come amante dimostra lo perde, e viene inavvertitamente pietrificato dalla fanciulla. Che disperata, vuole almeno portare a termine la vendetta dell’uomo che amava, e giunge in Vaticano alla presenza di Giulio II per pietrificare il papa e tutta la sua corte. Ma, com’è come non è, i suoi poteri lapidificatori decadono in questo emisfero e Giulio II scampa alla pietrificazione quanto al corpo; «quanto al cuore dell’augusto vegliardo, già da prima e da un pezzo era di sasso, di macigno, di scoglio», come lapidariamente – è il caso di dire – soggiunge l’explicit di questa serissima panzana. Neppure nel gioco letterario l’acre pessimismo d’Imbriani che colora di tragico il cinico e il beffardo della sua intuizione del mondo si placa. Né la storia d’Italia sa mutarsi in meglio e far pendere le sorti in favore della santa ambizione di Cesare Borgia d’unificarla. Sicché questa panzana che così bizzarramente illustra il suo pessimismo scava ben a fondo nelle scelte politiche d’Imbriani mettendo in luce e mostrando una delle convinzioni e degli atteggiamenti che infondono il suo spirito reazionario. Avviato agli studi di giurisprudenza dal padre – Carlo Bersezio, un giudice di tendenze liberali – frequenta fin da adolescente i circoli letterari della capitale sabauda. Esordisce quattordicenne con un primo lavoro teatrale, Le male lingue, che conoscerà successivamente una discreta fortuna sotto il nuovo titolo Una bolla di sapone (Milano 1876). Il suo vero esordio teatrale avviene al Carignano di Torino nella stagione 1852/1853 con i drammi Pietro Micca e Romolo in cui gli ideali patriottici venivano adattati ai canoni classici dell'arte drammatica. Quasi come una sorta di basso continuo la sua opera (per il resto fortemente debitrice a influenze d’oltralpe, da Dumas a Hugo, Balzac, Sue) è percorsa da una vena umoristica e satirica. Assumendo nel 1854 la direzione del Fischietto, uno dei più importanti periodici satirici d’Italia, riscuote un'ampia notorietà. Il capolavoro riconosciuto di Bersezio è la commedia piccolo-borghese Le miserie di Monsù Travet (rappresentata a Torino al Teatro Alfieri il 4 aprile 1863 dalla compagnia di Giovanni Toselli) che ebbe a suo tempo gli elogi di Manzoni, mentre il nome del suo protagonista Travet o Travetti venne accolto nel Dizionario di Petrocchi come sinonimo di «piccolo burocrate», «impiegatuccio» ed era ancora ampiamente usato fino agli anni settanta del XX secolo.
