Book Description
Made-in-Canada-Humour is an interdisciplinary survey and analysis of Canadian humour and humorists in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The book focuses on a variety of genres. It includes celebrated Canadian writers and poets with ironic and satiric perspectives; oral storytellers of tall tales in the country and the city; newspaper print humorists; representative national and regional cartoonists; and comedians of stage, radio and television. The humour gives voice to Canadian values and experiences, and consequently, techniques and styles of humour particular to the country. While a persistent comic theme has been joking at the expense of the United States, both countries have influenced one another’s humour. Canada’s unique humorous tradition also reflects its emergence from a colonial country to a postcolonial and postmodern nation with contemporary humour that addresses gender and racial issues.

Book Description
Humor is an integral part of the Canadian identity, and we have a truly unique way of looking at ourselves and the world. Our greatest joy is found in irreverence, poking fun at our own stereotypes - shorts in the snow, beavers in the bush, love in a canoe - or by tweaking the nose of the grumbling giant to the South. We see the chaotic and the absurd all around us, and through irony, parody, and satire we laugh when facing the truth, or at times to avoid crying. What a nation finds funny, and how it embraces humor, is key to what makes a nation great. And we are a great nation! This collection includes short fiction, illustration, and short graphic fiction from a broad spectrum of backgrounds, persuasions, genders, and visions, uniting regional and cultural expression in a way never done before.

Book Description
For the past six decades (that's 60 years-we did the math so you don't have to) MAD Magazine has keenly observed the American landscape and promptly made fun of everything in sight. Unwavering in their commitment to high quality stupidity, MAD's legendary artists and writers, long known as "The Usual Gang of Idiots," have brilliantly satirized politics, celebrities, sports, media, cultural trends, and more. Totally MAD (originally titled The New American Cookbook until cooler heads prevailed) is the ultimate collection of MAD's most idiotic material, including such classics as Spy vs. Spy, The MAD Fold-in, A MAD Look At..., The Lighter Side of, Horrifying Clichés and The Shadow Knows, plus modern MAD classics including The MAD Strip Club and The Fundalini Pages. Whether you grew up with MAD in the 50s, 60s, or 70s, reading it with a flashlight under the covers so your parents wouldn't catch you, or in the 80s, 90s and beyond, reading it while watching the MADtv sketch comedy show or the more recent animated series on the Cartoon Network, this book will bring back fond memories and also provide a great introduction to MAD for new readers. Then again, maybe not. SPECIAL BONUS! Includes "The Soul of MAD," 12 classic cover prints, ten featuring Alfred E. Neuman, MAD's gap-toothed grinning idiot mascot. These beautiful reproductions are suitable for framing or wrapping fish.

Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, University of Rostock (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Proseminar: Margaret Atwood, Oryx and Crake. Contexts and Criticism, language: English, abstract: This essay sets out to analyze Margaret Atwood’s use of black humor and satire in her novel "Oryx and Crake". Furthermore, it examines the function of such. Especially this essay looks at Atwood’s intention to provide a satiric tone and black humor and shows that they are based on social observations and concerns that are evident in the early twenty-first century. To achieve this, the paper is structured into two main chapters. In the first chapter on "Black Humor and Satire" the author gives an overview of these terms, serving as a framework for further investigations. Additionally, the paper deals with laughter, to show which kind of laughter derives from Atwood's humor. In the next chapter on "Observations on Black Humor and Satire in Oryx and Crake", the paper focuses on the satirical tone and the black humor in the novel, based on the author's own reception of the text.
