Book Description
Factor such as market orientation toward grain purchase by specifications rather than by variety, the need to service niche markets for grain, and changes in elevator & transportation systems, will make it extremely difficult for the present system of visual grading to accommodate the future demands of grain marketing in western Canada. This paper explains various aspects of the development of electronic grading as a response to this issue. It discusses the rationale for grading, the problems with a reduction in flexibility of storage at elevators, the need to identify grains & seeds by class at the farm level, the proposed affidavit system monitored by the Canadian Grain Commission and served by a computer network, and the use of near infrared spectroscopy and associated software as the technology with the potential to achieve the proposed electronic grading system. The final sections lay out the strategy for developing the system, progress achieved to date, and the initial implementation of the system for canola seed.
