Book Description
This book undertakes a fundamental assessment of Menander of Laodicea ('Menander Rhetor'), and of the nature and functions of rhetoric in later antiquity (second to fifth centuries AD). It examines Menander's fragments, collected here for the first time, in detail, showing that he was primarily an expert on judicial and deliberative oratory; a source-critical analysis of the Demosthenes scholia shows that his influential commentary on Demosthenes can be partially reconstructed. Itexplores the educational practices of the rhetorical schools, and shows that the skills which they taught still had a direct application in the subsequent careers of the rhetoricians' pupils.

Book Description
This work discusses the decline of Greek religion and the christianization of town and countryside in the eastern Roman Empire between the death of Julian the Apostate and the laws of Justinian the Great against paganism, c. 370-529.It examines such questions as the effect of the laws against sacrifice and sorcery, temple conversions, the degradation of pagan gods into daimones, the christianization of rite, and the social, political and economic background of conversion to Christianity. Several local contexts are examined in great detail: Gaza, Athens, Alexandria, Aphrodisias, central Asia Minor, northern Syria, the Nile basin, and the province of Arabia. It lays particular emphasis on the criticism of epigraphy, legal evidence, and hagiographic texts, and traces the demographic growth of Christianity and the chronology of this process in select local contexts. It also seeks to understand the behavioral patterns of conversion.

Book Description
This volume contains editions of sixty-five Greek, Demotic, Coptic and Arabic texts from Egypt, contributed as a token of friendship and respect by forty-six of Klaas Worpa (TM)s colleagues and co-authors upon his retirement from the Papyrological Institute of the University of Leiden in August 2008. The contents are as diverse as Klaas Worpa (TM)s own wide range of interests, and provide a vivid impression of life and culture in Graeco-Roman Egypt. The texts are written on papyrus, potsherds, parchment, paper and wood. They include both literary and documentary papyri and ostraca, and date from the third century BC to the eleventh century AD. They are published fully, most for the first time, with transcriptions and translations, and are accompanied by photographs.
