This collection of original essays identifies and analyzes 19th-century women's theological thought in all its diversity, demonstrating the ways that women revised, subverted, or rejected elements of masculine theology in creating theologies of their own. While women's religion has been widely studied, this is the only collection of essays that examines 19th-century women's theology as such A substantial introduction clarifies the relationships between religion and theology and discusses the barriers to women's participation in theological discourse as well as the ways women overcame or avoided these barriers. The essays analyze theological ideas in a variety of genres. Victorian Verse: The Poetics of Everyday Life casts new light on nineteenth-century poetry by examining the period through its popular verse forms and their surrounding social and media landscape. The volume offers insight into two central concepts of both the Victorian era and our own—status and taste—and how cultural hierarchies then and now were and are constructed and broken. By recovering the lost diversity of Victorian verse, the book maps the breadth of Victorian writing and reading practices, illustrating how these seemingly minor verse genres actually possessed crucial social functions for Victorians, particularly in education, leisure practices, the cultural production of class, and the formation of individual and communal identities. Since Arthur Symons’s declaration in 1895 in the Saturday Review that Christina Rossetti was “among the great poets of the nineteenth century,” Rossetti’s image among critics has undergone permutations as divergent as Victorian culture is from postmodern. Now Diane D’Amico redeems Rossetti from the various one-dimensional castings assigned her across the generations—those of a saint writing poetry for God; of a sexually repressed, neurotic woman of minor talent; and, most recently, of a subversive feminist questioning the patriarchy—and renders a fuller, more intricate understanding of the poet than any to date. With flawless logic, balance, and clarity, D’Amico seals her case that Rossetti’s faith, her gender, and the times in which she lived should all be considered to appreciate her poetic voice.
