A study of the nine panels that comprise the Isenheim Altarpiece, painted ca. 1512-16 by Matthias Grünewald, now installed in Colmar's Unterlinden Museum. Pp. 61-67 discuss the symbolic depiction in one of the panels of a chamberpot with Hebrew lettering, signifying the filth and decay of the Old (Jewish) Law. States that by Grünewald's time, vilification of Jews had become the predominant function of Hebrew letters in Christian art. Gives other examples, and discusses the derogatory "Judensau" imagery widespread in medieval and early modern Germany.

This book examines the nature and extent of changes in communal structures and self-definition among Jews and Christians in Germany during the century before the Reformation. It argues that Christian community was restructured along civic and religious lines resulting in the development of a local sacred society that integrated material and spiritual well being into a moral and legal society, stressing the common good and internal peace, while Jewish community, given a variety of factors, came to be defined through regional communal structures and moral and legal discourse that allowed for broader geographical communal identity. Many hermitages and eremitic communities are recorded throughout the medieval period, yet to date, there has been no comprehensive archaeological study. This richly illustrated book will consequently discuss a range of hermitages and introduce the reader to their architectural forms, spaces, location and environments as well as the religious practices associated with them.
