Book Description
The Sonnets of Gary Langford is a collection of his best sonnets, a few reprinted from his previous books, Gary Langford Reading From His Poems, www.poetryarchive.org Others were written for what is his ultimate collection of sonnets, aptly published as his fourteenth book of poetry for this very reason. Many of the sonnets are gems. Gary is the author of 34 books, of which 10 are novels, 4 are collections of stories, 14 are poetry, 3 are drama sketches, and 2 are textbooks of writing, along with his recent Memoir of a Teacher Writer. The collection shows his wide approach to story telling, as he has used sonnets in some of his plays, and, as you will see here, he turns pieces of his prose into sonnet form, drum tight, yet easy to understand. Each of these is a selected piece he has finely crafted. This has one of his best prose endings in his novel, Newlands, performed many times, including on the radio, and now as a prose sonnet. He has a few visual sonnets as well in this beautiful work of contemplative thought and comedy. Walking through the sonnets. Dreams burn. Wheels turn.

Book Description
Finalist, 2018 National Jewish Book Award for Modern Jewish Thought and Experience, presented by the Jewish Book Council Winner, 2019 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award, in the Jewish Literature and Linguistics Category, given by the Association for Jewish Studies A fascinating glimpse into the world of the coffeehouse and its role in shaping modern Jewish culture Unlike the synagogue, the house of study, the community center, or the Jewish deli, the café is rarely considered a Jewish space. Yet, coffeehouses profoundly influenced the creation of modern Jewish culture from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. With roots stemming from the Ottoman Empire, the coffeehouse and its drinks gained increasing popularity in Europe. The “otherness,” and the mix of the national and transnational characteristics of the coffeehouse perhaps explains why many of these cafés were owned by Jews, why Jews became their most devoted habitués, and how cafés acquired associations with Jewishness. Examining the convergence of cafés, their urban milieu, and Jewish creativity, Shachar M. Pinsker argues that cafés anchored a silk road of modern Jewish culture. He uncovers a network of interconnected cafés that were central to the modern Jewish experience in a time of migration and urbanization, from Odessa, Warsaw, Vienna, and Berlin to New York City and Tel Aviv. A Rich Brew explores the Jewish culture created in these social spaces, drawing on a vivid collection of newspaper articles, memoirs, archival documents, photographs, caricatures, and artwork, as well as stories, novels, and poems in many languages set in cafés. Pinsker shows how Jewish modernity was born in the café, nourished, and sent out into the world by way of print, politics, literature, art, and theater. What was experienced and created in the space of the coffeehouse touched thousands who read, saw, and imbibed a modern culture that redefined what it meant to be a Jew in the world.

Book Description
"The American Sonnet: An Anthology of Poems and Essays showcases the diversity of the American sonnet. 800 years after the sonnet's invention, this volume celebrates the extraordinary development of the sonnet in the hands of American poets-and those living under US empire-from traditional to experimental, political and personal. Edited by poet and scholar team Dora Malech and Laura T. Smith, this anthology collects and foregrounds an impressive range of 20th and 21st century sonnets, including formal and formally subversive sonnets by established and emerging poets, and presents these alongside a selection of earlier American sonnets, highlighting connections across literary moments and movements. The critical essays likewise draw together diverse voices, methodologies, and historical and theoretical perspectives that represent the burgeoning field of American sonnet studies. Malech and Smith capture the central questions for American sonneteers. Who belongs to the tradition of the American sonnet? How do translation and multicultural and transnational identities complicate the Americanness of the "American" sonnet? How do Black, queer, trans, neurodiverse, working class, Appalachian, and Deaf poets claim the sonnet and how does it serve them? How do American poets experiment with meter, stanza, rhyme, lineation, and visuality to make the sonnet their own? And how are American sonneteers writing about love, loss, and trauma in new ways that change the sonnet tradition? The American Sonnet shows the form continuing to function as a poetic bellwether as centuries of poets use its peculiar confines to negotiate questions of nation, race, class, gender, sexuality, diaspora, and poetic tradition"--

Book Description
The Viennese café was a key site of urban modernity around 1900. In the rapidly growing city it functioned simultaneously as home and workplace, affording opportunities for both leisure and intellectual exchange. This volume explores the nature and function of the coffeehouse in the social, cultural, and political world of fin-de-siècle Vienna. Just as the café served as a creative meeting place within the city, so this volume initiates conversations between different disciplines focusing on Vienna at the beginning of the twentieth century. Contributions are drawn from the fields of social and cultural history, literary studies, Jewish studies and art, and architectural and design history. A fresh perspective is also provided by a selection of comparative articles exploring coffeehouse culture elsewhere in Eastern Europe.

The RROM has been developed specifically for CAFÉ EDMOVIA and it has two easy key features: Feature One: Poems are arranged from short to long, front to back, to help the random reader quickly find a poem that he or she has time to read. Feature Two: To avoid any contrasting levity, mood and/or tone conflict between adjacent poems and assist the random reader in selecting a poem tone they prefer, there are coffee cup symbols placed above the title of each titled poem. The levity of titled poems is indicated with 1 to 5 coffee cup symbols. One cup = meant to be funny, five cups= meant to be serious. Simple, easy and helpful to the random reader. Cup of Joe Poetry: Accessible easy to read and understand poems from light brew to dark brew that you can enjoy, ponder, have a laugh and a friendly free refill... all without a barista to explain everything.
