Excerpt from Aut Caesar Aut Nihil, Vol. 2 of 3 It is not that, Julie. But as I am often in this street on charitable quests, and as one of my orphanages and the hospital I visit are in the district, there is no earthly reason why I should not be here one day as much as another in one house as well as in another. It would be preposterous in me to dress for the part the very way to attract the attention I wish to avoid.' Book Description
Excerpt from Caesar Borgia, Vol. 2 of 3: An Historical Romance The dusty and neglected aspect of the whole pharmacy indicated that the owner had not many calls on his skill, and apologized for his absence, even if it were not probable that he was one of the con tubernium allotted to hear the sermon. But no other living soul appeared, and as there seemed to be no exit but by a strongly barred door and casement, closed with iron panels, after a glance over the medicinal wares, Alfonsoconcluded that the object of his search must have remained above. Under this persuasion he was about to remount the stairs, when he distinctly heard what seemed to be a sob or sigh from below the spot Where he stood. Glancing suddenly round he perceived a slight glimmer in a large chimney-place behind, although there was cer tainly no fire in it; and stumbling as he went over some old crucibles in his hurry, he found, with as tonishment, that the light fell from what appeared to be an open trapdoor in the back wall of the chimney, masked by the projection of the front. The same light revealed a flight of narrow steps on each side, which ascended to it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Provinces of the Roman Empire From Caesar to Diocletian, Vol. 2 In so far the Parthian empire was the genuine coun terpart to the Roman. As in the one the Oriental vice royship is an exceptional occurrence, so in the other is the Greek city; the general Oriental aristocratic character of the Parthian government is as little injuriously affected by the Greek mercantile towns on the west coast as is the civic organisation of the Roman state by the vassal king doms of Cappadocia and Armenia. While in the state of the Caesars the romano-greek urban commonwealth spreads more and more, and gradually becomes the general form of administration, the foundation of towns the true mark of helleno-roman civilisation, which embraces the Greek mercantile cities and the military colonies of Rome as well as the grand settlements of Alexander and the Alexandrids - suddenly breaks off with the emergence of the Parthian government in the East, and even the existing Greek cities of the Parthian empire wane in the further course of development. There, as here, the rule more and more prevails over the exceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Fixed Period, Vol. 2 of 2: A Novel A man should be happy. I doubt whether Caesar Was happy with all those enemies around him, - Gauls, and Britons, and Romans. If a man be doing his duty, let him not think too much of that condition of mind which he calls happiness. Let him despise happiness and do his duty, and he will in one sense be happy. But if there creep upon him a doubt as to his duty, if he once begin to feel that he may per haps be wrong, then farewell all peace of mind, - then will come that condition in which a. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 2 of 8: From the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Revolution in 1688 The faithful ministers of Henry, who had vigorously opposed all the enterprises of his sons, were received with open arms, and were continued in those offices which they had honourably discharged to their former matter. This prudent conduct might be the result of reflection; but in a prince, like Richard, so much guided by passion, and so little by policy, it was commonly ascribed to a principle still more virtuous and more honourable. Richard, that he might make atonement to one parent for his breach of duty to the other, immediately sent orders for releasing the queen-dowager from the confinement in which she had long been detained; and he entrusted her with the government of England till his arrival in that kingdom. His bounty to his brother John was rather profuse and imprudent. Besides bestowing on him the county of Mortaigne in Normandy, granting him a pension of four thousand marks a year, and marrying him to Avisa the daughter of the earl of Glocester, by whom he inherited all the possessions of that opulent family, he increased this appanage, which the late king had destined him, by other extensive grants and concessions. He conferred on him the whole estate of William Peverell, which had escheated to the crown: He put him in possession of eight castles, with all the forests and honours annexed to them: He delivered over to him no less than six earldoms, Cornwal, Devon, Somerset, Nottingham, Dorset, Lancaster, and Derby: And endeavouring, by favours, to fix that vicious prince in his duty, he put it too much in his power, whenever he pleased, to depart from it.
