Book Description
Excerpt from Cabbages and Kings William Sydney Porter (1862-1910) published all of his work - a novel and some 300 short stories - under the pseudonym O. Henry. His talent for vivid caricature, local tone, narrative agility, and compassion tempered by irony made him a vastly popular writer in the last decade of his life. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, to ordinary middle-class parents and worked in an uncle's drugstore as a youth, becoming a certified pharmacist. Like many Southerners after the Civil War, he sought his fortune in the West, holding various jobs (newspaper work, clerking in a land office, a teller at an Austin bank). Charged with embezzlement in 1894, he fled to Honduras, returning in 1897 to be with his ill and dying wife. His conviction was caused more by his eluding trial than by the conflicting evidence of theft. In the Ohio State Penitentiary (1898-1901), he began to write the stories that made him famous. He moved to New York, remarried, and kept his identity a secret from all but a few friends. He is buried in Asheville, North Carolina. He is universally honored for his mastery of the short story and for his humane spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
A series of stories which each explore some individual aspect of life in a paralytically sleepy Central American town while each advancing some aspect of the larger plot and relating back one to another in a complex structure which slowly explicates its own background even as it painstakingly erects a town which is one of the most detailed literary creations of the period. In this book, O. Henry coined the term ""banana republic"". Set in a fictitious Central American country called the Republic of Anchuria, this is a classic tale that has been loved by many for generations, a great addition to the collection. William Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 - June 5, 1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American short story writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their surprise endings. Book Description
Excerpt from Cabbages and Kings: England and the English, the Kaiser and His Court, the Scandinavian Democracies, the Czar and His People, and the Courts of Italy As a rule, on such occasions, one fixes one's face in a smile, tries to think of some thing agreeable, and bows from side to side with the regularity of a clockwork figure. As it was, I was interested to watch the crowd lining the streets through which the procession passed, for I had not been in England before, and was curious to see all I could of the English people. And as I looked at the sea of faces, it seemed to me that they were thousands of masks, the changeless expression of which gave no clue to the thoughts of the wear ers. And whenever I have seen an Eng lish crowd, even at a foot-ball match, the expressionless faces have baffled me, and I have felt my inability to understand it. Indeed, although I have spent a great part of my life in England, I have never been able to understand the English people. I have been at court, stayed in fashionable houses, hidden myself for weeks at a time in the homes of middle-class people. I know Cornwall and Yorkshire, have stayed in London, Tunbridge Wells, Brighton, and a dozen other places, but all the same England remains for me a puzzle which I cannot understand. Book Description
Andrew Ciulla hadn't intended to spend most of his life as a freelance writer at age 18 after high school. He entered an art school to learn to paint like the davincis and bottcellis of Italy's golden age of art. This volume titled Cabbages and Kings is sort of a quick review of what Andrew Ciulla has been up to these years. His injection of eighteen poems to the eighteen short stories makes this a good book to have in everybody's library. Sort of two books in one.
