Book Description
S2Describes the distribution of sawtimber trees by diameter at breast height (d.b.h.) and grade for eight hardwood species in upland oak stands of Pennsylvania. The proportion of trees by d.b.h. and grade revealed differences between species. The quality of northern red oak, white oak, and yellow-poplar appeared inherently better than that of red maple, chestnut oak, and a group of other hardwoods. Grade predictions by size and species allow more precise timber appraisals and enable managers to evaluate alternative management strategies more accurately. S3.

West Virginia Yellow-poplar Lumber Defect Database
Author: Lawrence E. Osborn
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Liriodendron tulipifera
Languages : en
Pages : 688
Book Description
S2In West Virginia, yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is abundant and is a prime candidate for increased utilization in a variety of manufacturing industries. Computer simulations are a cost-effective tool for estimating potential cutting yields from lumber. They can be used to promote increased use of yellow-poplar in the furniture, cabinet, and architectural woodworking industries and may also lead to increased utilization of the lower grades of lumber. This paper describes the data collection methods and the format of the new West Virginia yellow-poplar lumber defect database that was developed for use with computer simulation programs. The database contains descriptions of 627 boards, totaling approximately 3,800 board feet, collected in West Virginia for grades FAS, FASIF, No. 1 Common, No. 2A Common, and No. 28 Common.S3.

Factors Affecting Recreation Participation by Vermont Residents
Author: Thomas A. More
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Recreational surveys
Languages : en
Pages : 522
Book Description
Long-term recreation planning requires an understanding of recreation participation patterns. This study examined Vermonters' participation in 27 leisure activities from three domains (outdoor, resource based, and indoor) to see how such participation differed in each domain. Indoor activities were the most popular, followed by resource-based activities and general outdoor activities. Overall participation declined with age, though this effect was mitigated somewhat for older parents. Other socioeconomic and demographic variables had limited effects on participation.
