Book Description
Excerpt from Bulletin of the North Carolina State Normal and Industrial College; August, 1918, Vol. 8: Twenty-Sixth Annual Catalogue, 1917-1918 The chief mission of the College has been and will continue to be the preparation of teachers. At least two-thirds of all its enrolled students and nine-tenths of all its graduates ren'der service in either the public or private schools of North Carolina. Many of the courses, therefore, are designed particularly for teachers. For students who may not wish to teach, and who must yet look to their own efforts for a liveli hood, instruction is Offered in the commercial branches, drawing, industrial art, home economics and other subjects - the mastery of which will enable them to become self-supporting. The College realizes, however, that not all who seek an education do so with a desire to become teachers, or from motives of self support. For that considerable body of women who seek the broad culture to be derived from a familiarity with the world's best thought and achievement, liberal courses in the arts, sciences, and music are offered the Institution thus endeavoring to meet the needs of the women of North Carolina, and to give such educa tion as will add to the efficiency of the average woman's work, whatever her position and field of labor. Book Description
Edited by Matthew L. Downs and M. Ryan Floyd, The American South and the Great War, 1914–1924 investigates how American participation in World War I further strained the region’s relationship with the federal government, how wartime hardships altered the South’s traditional social structure, and how the war effort stressed and reshaped the southern economy. The volume contends that participation in World War I contributed greatly to the modernization of the South, initiating changes ultimately realized during World War II and the postwar era. Although the war had a tremendous impact on the region, few scholars have analyzed the topic in a comprehensive fashion, making this collection a much-needed addition to the study of American and southern history. These essays address a variety of subjects, including civil rights, economic growth and development, politics and foreign policy, women’s history, gender history, and military history. Collectively, this volume highlights a time and an experience often overshadowed by later events, illustrating the importance of World War I in the emergence of a modern South.
