Book Description
For the law enforcement officer and the civilian who may be in a situation that requires the use of a handgun to stop a lethal threat action, it is important that the person differentiates between the crass, glib and self-serving advertisements of ammunition vendors and the reality of how, what and why effective stopping power occurs. Factors to consider are the physiological response, the psychological response, the time frame parameter and bullet efficacy. Of these four factors, only bullet efficacy can be somewhat controlled by the person, this only by understanding how and to what extent the bullet contributes to the degree of stopping power obtained. A number of concepts / formulae have been included so as to permit the reader to consider their merits and whether or not they are consistent with the reality of biology, physics and other relevant sciences. Finally the material in this book is intended to permit those persons to instruct, teach or make decisions regarding the selection of a service handgun/cartridge combination that will help to provide the means to prevail in a lethal threat confrontation. About the Author: Mr. Bredsten retired from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center/Firearms Division (FLETC/FAD). With FLETC/FAD he performed duties as a firearms instructor and he also taught ballistics to the FLETC/FAD staff and to students in the Law Enforcement Rifle Training Program and in the Precision Rifle (Sniper) and Observer Program. Subjects covered included the ballistic coefficient, barrel time, the coefficient of reduction (form), Greenhill formula (rate of rifling twist), firearm recoil, bullet time-of-flight, bullet drop, bullet midrange, wind deflection, bullet penetration potential and bullet terminal (wounding) efficacy. Since retiring he has provided ballistics consultation service for the FLETC/FAD, the Transportation Security Agency, the Orange County (Florida) Sheriff's Department and Exxon Mobil Corporation. Mr. Bredsten attended and completed various classes/courses relating to firearms (e.g., H&K MP5, Steyr Aug, Uzi, Tactical Speed Shooting and advanced shotgun) and ballistics (e.g., the first and second International Wound Ballistics Conferences, a Federal Law Enforcement Ammunition and Ballistics Seminar and Oehler's Ballistic Instrumentation). Mr. Bredsten has an AA degree from Chaffey Jr. College and a BA degree from Sacramento State College and currently resides in Georgia.

Book Description
In Quantitative Ammunition Selection, Charles Schwartz presents an accessible mathematical model that allows armed professionals and lawfully-armed citizens to evaluate the terminal ballistic performance of self-defense ammunition using water as a valid ballistic test medium. Based upon a modified fluid dynamics equation that correlates highly (r=+0.94) to more than 800 points of manufacturer- and laboratory-test data, the quantitative model allows the armed professional to generate ballistic test results equivalent to those obtained in calibrated 10 percent ordnance gelatin. Using data generated from water tests, the quantitative model accurately predicts the permanent wound cavity volume and mass, terminal penetration depth (+/- 1cm), and exit velocity of handgun projectiles as these phenomena would occur in calibrated 10 percent ordnance gelatin and soft tissue. A retired law enforcement professional, Schwartz provides a concise explanation of the relevant principles of mechanics, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics pertaining to the model and its derivation. The quantitative model is clearly presented with illustrated computational examples that provide guidance to the armed professional in every aspect of the model's application.

Book Description
The purpose of this work was to investigate the behavior of small arms ammunition in snow under laboratory conditions. Knowledeg of this behavior will lead to more efficient design of expedient field fortifications using snow as the primary construction material. Three types of ammunition, the M193, M80, and M43, were tested. Round were fired into snow targets of various thickness up to that thickness required to fully stop the projectiles. The maximum penetrations for the three rounds tested were 0.70m, 1.26m and 1.06m respectively. Velocity loss as a function of target thickness was determined by measuring projectile velocity before and after impact of the projectile with the target. The velocity-loss-versus-thickness data showed a sigmoid shape common to the three types of rounds. The impact and exit yaw angles of the M193 rounds were estimated. Scatter in the test data was attributed, in part, to random variations in the impact yaw angle. The penetration required for a 90 dge yaw was determined by the exit yaw measurements. This was shown to correspond to the inflection point of the velocity-loss-versus-penetration curve. This point is potentially significant in the design of composite fortifications. Discussions deal with basic concepts and definitions, the occurrence and significance of projectile tumbling and the use of laboratory tests for small arms evaluation in snow targets. The validity of the methodology used was established by testing M193 rounds in gelatin targets. These results compared favorably with similar test results in the literature. (Author).

Book Description
This work provides comprehensive, practice-oriented coverage of ballistics. It explains the principles and calculation methods for the main four areas of ballistics, regardless of calibre, drawing on numerous facts, observations and examples from the authors decades of experience. Interior ballistics: The characteristics of explosive materials (detonating agents and propellants), methods for calculating gas pressure and the velocity of projectiles and rockets during the acceleration phase, alternative systems for accelerating projectiles and the acceleration of fragments. Intermediate ballistics: The dynamics of the moment at which the projectile leaves the muzzle and propellant gas is ejected from the barrel, effects on the person or structure supporting the weapon and approaches to resolving questions regarding shots from close range in criminology and forensic medicine. Exterior ballistics: The forces acting on a projectile and methods for calculating them, models for calculating trajectories (including the ballistic coefficient), gyroscopic projectile stabilization theory and aerodynamic optimization of projectiles. Terminal ballistics: Empirically-derived facts and data. The principles of ballistic protection design, ballistic testing problems and possible solutions and a comprehensive discussion of ricochets a matter of considerable importance in forensics. The book is intended for ballisticians, military personnel, police officers, criminologists, shooting range specialists, sport shooters, hunters and anyone else with an interest in ballistics. Beat P. Kneubuehl holds a PhD in forensic science and a masters degree in mathematics. For 33 years he was head of the Ballistic Science Unit at the Ballistics, Weapons and Ammunition Test Centre of the Swiss Ministry of Defence. He developed key ballistics software and frequently played a leading role in range tests involving every calibre of munition. He devoted himself to the problems of ballistic protection and the effects of projectiles under the auspices of the European Committee for Standardization and of NATO. After completing a doctorate in forensic science, he added forensic ballistics to his field of activity. His earlier publications include the standard work Wound Ballistics: Basics and Applications (also published by Springer-Verlag).

Book Description
The science of small arms ballistics is seriously underdeveloped and underappreciated. This unique and different book is a comprehensive study that fills a legitimate need for a work that covers the engineering and theory of small arms ballistics. The author shares his extensive research on working out the science of small arm ballistics mathematically and explains his theories, such as the field-effect and the field-effect over trajectory and time, along with new theories on interior, exterior, and terminal ballistics. Each equation describes a mathematical relationship, such as transfer of energy, and has an engineering application to help solve a design problem. Some equations, such as the calculation of bullet length with a given muzzle velocity and rate of twist, represent manipulations of those equations. Some other equations represent a set of mathematical instructions to resolve a technical problem, such as the computation of trajectory or depth of penetration of living tissue in real-time.
