Book Description
Interest in bulk amorphous alloys has increased rapidly throughout the world and these materials have now gained a position of great importance in basic science and engineering materials technology. Bulk amorphous alloys based upon the Zr-Al-Ni-Cu, Zr-(Ti,Nb)-Al-Ni-Cu and Zr-Ti-Ni-Cu-Be systems have already achieved wide commercial success as components of various tehnical accessories ranging from sporting goods to optical instruments. Here is a state-of-the art review on this new group of materials, covering all areas of interest, ranging from the synthesis of these special alloys and their fundamental properties, to their engineering characteristics and applications. This work will therefore be of equal interest to those who wish to become fully acquainted with the subject, and to those who are already actively engaged in the field.

Book Description
Reflecting the fast pace of research in the field, the Second Edition of Bulk Metallic Glasses has been thoroughly updated and remains essential reading on the subject. It incorporates major advances in glass forming ability, corrosion behavior, and mechanical properties. Several of the newly proposed criteria to predict the glass-forming ability of alloys have been discussed. All other areas covered in this book have been updated, with special emphasis on topics where significant advances have occurred. These include processing of hierarchical surface structures and synthesis of nanophase composites using the chemical behavior of bulk metallic glasses and the development of novel bulk metallic glasses with high-strength and high-ductility and superelastic behavior. New topics such as high-entropy bulk metallic glasses, nanoporous alloys, novel nanocrystalline alloys, and soft magnetic glassy alloys with high saturation magnetization have also been discussed. Novel applications, such as metallic glassy screw bolts, surface coatings, hyperthermia glasses, ultra-thin mirrors and pressure sensors, mobile phone casing, and degradable biomedical materials, are described. Authored by the world’s foremost experts on bulk metallic glasses, this new edition endures as an indispensable reference and continues to be a one-stop resource on all aspects of bulk metallic glasses.

Book Description
We present investigations on the plastic deformation behavior of a brittle bulk amorphous alloy by simple uniaxial compressive loading at room temperature. A patterning is possible by cold-plastic forming of the typically brittle Hf-based bulk amorphous alloy through controlling homogenous flow without the need for thermal energy or shaping at elevated temperatures. The experimental evidence suggests that there is an inconsistency between macroscopic plasticity and deformability of an amorphous alloy. Moreover, imprinting of specific geometrical features on Cu foil and Zr-based metallic glass is represented by using the patterned bulk amorphous alloy as a die. These results demonstrate the ability of amorphous alloys or metallic glasses to precisely replicate patterning features onto both conventional metals and the other amorphous alloys. In conclusion, our work presents an avenue for avoiding the embrittlement of amorphous alloys associated with thermoplastic forming and yields new insight the forming application of bulk amorphous alloys at room temperature without using heat treatment.

Book Description
Bulk metallic glasses (bulk amorphous alloys) constitute an exciting class of metallic materials for structural and functional use. These glass-forming metallic alloys vitrify at relatively low cooling rates (from the molten state), compared with conventional rapidly quenched metallic glasses. Owing to their exceptional resistance to crystallization, these 'easy' glass-forming alloys can be cast in bulk form with dimensions of millimeters or centimeters. The development of such alloys has opened the possibility for studies of the kinetic and thermodynamic properties of undercooled liquids. It also looks at applications for glassy metals based on the ability to fabricate three-dimensional shapes and components. It has become apparent that the development of bulk glass-forming alloys has ushered in a second generation of development in the field of amorphous metals. This book discusses the progress being made. Topics include: atomic and electronic structure; general topics in bulk metallic glasses; glass-forming ability and thermal stability; thermal stability, transport and magnetic properties and mechanical and other properties.
