Book Description
The word ’batik’ is possibly of Malay origin from the word ’tik’ meaning ’to drip’ or ’to drop.’ The term is applied to a resist dye technique invented independently in locations as diverse as Ancient Egypt, Japan and Turkestan. Batik is a remarkably flexible textile technique and is suited to small-scale methods of production, but demand from the fashion and tourism industries is increasing. This volume brings together the experiences and concerns of the international community of batik producers. It gives voice to their suggestions for ensuring that the producers of this traditional craft are integrated into its increasingly global production rather than excluded from it. Building on the work of batik designers and producers the book discusses the emergence of a global craft consciousness. Batik producers report on innovative measures taken both individually and collectively to hold their market position while commercial producers frequently annex and mass-produce traditional batik design. The book concludes with a discussion of marketing and production innovations and tourism which enable the producers of batik to maintain the integrity of their designs whilst harnessing the benefits of new commercial forms.

Book Description
It is very common in the traditional community in Indonesia that women sometimes act as real women. This is based on the root word of women, empu, meaning as individuals who are to be honoured greatly. In this case the role of women are very central. I found that this philosophical means of women has on Naniek Widayati. She does not appear as a genuine woman only, nor as a person who does ordinary works. Even though she grew up as a daughter of a Batik entrepreneur in Laweyan, Surakarta, her characteristics were not merely influenced by those environmental. It has been proved by completing her doctoral dissertation recently. Through her sensitivity in art, culture, and space that she obtained when she was studying architecture, and from the point of view of archaeology, Naniek was able to define the environment of Laweyan as an integrated system which is formed by sub-systems, which affected the environment of Laweyan through the artefact and nonartefact and created the town as a district area, which is reflected a great interaction between the environment of social cultural and local ecology. Since I knew her 20 years ago, Naniek grew up as a firm person who never says “give-up” in every situation and I know that this becomes one of her obligations as a Muslim who obeys the doctrine of her religion to study further and further. I am sure that her research and other works will be successfully benefit the Indonesian community now and in the future. Jakarta, 12th, August 2003 Eduard Tjahjadi, Dipl. Ing. More than ten experts were invited in reviewing, giving suggestions for revision and at last selecting the papers. On that account, we would like to forward our appreciation and our gratefulness to such invited experts for having done the process. The committee received more than 180 papers from the participants and based on the results of the review, only 141 papers were declared fit to be presented at the seminar and subsequently published in the proceedings of BASA#3-2019 Papers in the proceeding are expected to give academic benefits, especially in broadening the horizon of our understanding in language, literature, and local culture studies. We realize that what we are presenting for the publication is till far for being perfect. Constructive criticism is very much welcome for improvement. Finally, the committees thank for the participation and congratulate for the publication of the papers in the proceedings of BASA#3-2019. The committees also thank all those who have supported and actively participated for the success of this event. Hopefully these Proceedings can be used as references in developing technology and improving learning activities in the fields of education, social, arts and humanities.
