The relationship between a coach and an athlete lies at the heart of the athletic experience. This relationship can profoundly impact how a student-athlete experiences their sport, as well as their overall development as a young adult. Despite this, research focused on effective coaching practices remains an under-studied area of inquiry, particularly at the high school level. The purpose of this research was to better understand coaching behaviors that lead to quality coach-athlete relationships and how positive relationships manifest themselves at the individual and team levels. This qualitative study examined 24 high school Varsity head coaches and assistant coaches in the Pacific Northwest. Surveys, semi-structured interviews, and on-site observations were utilized to solicit coach opinions and perceptions on how relationships with athletes are built and elevated. Components of the International Sports Coaching Framework and Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory were adapted to create a conceptual framework in which this study was grounded. Findings suggest that a strong coaching philosophy and baseline of sport knowledge underlie the relationship building process between high school coaches and their athletes. Demonstration of care, effective communication, as well as consistent and transparent behavior emerged as primary themes for relationship building. Findings also identify the creation of leadership and ownership opportunities for athletes as a cornerstone of effective coaching. Individual and team outcomes resulting from quality coach-athlete dyads are discussed, focused primarily on the benefits of committed athletes and the positive team environment that results. Findings tied to the barriers of relationship building are summarized, in addition to ways in which this study can inform future research centered around quality coaching practices in the high school environment and broader athletic context.

Abstract: For many coaches, athletes, and sport psychologists, mental toughness is considered to be one of the most essential characteristics athletes must possess in order to be successful in sport. While there is yet to be a consensus on what mental toughness means, the idea that coaches are one of the main influences of mental toughness development in athletes has been supported by many. The purpose of this study was to examine how the coach-athlete relationship can affect mental toughness development in athletes and if coaching behaviors are perceived depending on how athletes view their relationship with their coach. Participants of this longitudinal dual-methods study were 16 female volleyball players from a single NCAA Division II school. Athletes completed a demographic questionnaire, the Mental Toughness Scale (MTS-11), Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q), Coaching Behaviors Scale for Sport (CBS-S), and a total of three different open-ended questions at the pre- and post- season. Pearson r correlation analysis did not find significance between mental toughness and the perceived quality of the coach-athlete relationship; however, there was significance in the relationship between coaching behaviors and the coach-athlete relationship quality. A Paired t-Test analysis also found significant changes in how athletes viewed the quality of the coach- athlete relationships from pre- to post- season. A total of 11 themes were found after a thematic analysis was conducted for the responses to the open-ended questions. This study aimed to explore athletes’ ideal coach-athlete relationship and how this relationship can be achieved to maximize player development and performance.

Relationships and social interactions are crucial components in sport participation from adolescence through to elite and professional levels of competition. Recently, there has been growing interest in the study of the coach-athlete relationship as a result of an increase in the awareness of its implications and potential impact on performance success. The purposes of this research were to: (a) describe and interpret how one university sport coach develops and maintains relationships with athletes within one competitive season, and (b) describe and interpret the practices (including intentions and actions) used to facilitate social interactions that nurture the coach-athlete relationship. One male coach and twelve female elite university athletes from one sport team participated in the research. Data were generated from two main sources: observations of team practices and games, and two individual interviews with the coach and three athletes (one interview during the competitive season and one interview after the season had ended). Through a constructivist lens, I investigated the participants' unique perspectives of the ongoing processes within the coach-athlete relationship. I used Jowett's (2001) adaptation of interdependence theory, the 3+1Cs model (closeness, commitment, complementarity, and co-orientation), to examine the perspectives of both coach and athletes and subsequently create an interpretive representation of my findings. Findings highlighted the variety of ways participants understood and interpreted their coach-athlete relationship. Several potential influences of these relationships were uncovered during data analysis such as: vulnerability, gender, communication, and self-reflection. Implications for coaches, athletes, and coach educators are discussed.

"Successful coach-athlete relationships contribute to an athlete's positive personal, emotional, and performance development. In order to foster successful dyadic relationships, coaches need well-developed interpersonal skills allowing them to connect to their athletes. These skills allow coaches to continuously adapt themselves to and find the most effective ways of communicating with and motivating their athlete. Despite the importance of successful coach-athlete relationships, it remains unclear how coaches build and maintain successful coach-athlete relationships within dynamic sporting environments. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore how tennis coaches developed high-quality relationships with their athletes. Five elite tennis coaches were purposefully recruited based on the recommendation of Tennis Canada. Data were collected through two semi-structured interviews and three story completion tasks. A thematic analysis was used to generate themes across the semi-structured interviews and story-completion tasks. Results outlined that coaches built successful relationships with their athletes using an athlete-centered coaching philosophy, placing importance on the development of well-rounded human beings. Coaches believed learning to understand each athlete was at the center of building close relationships. In order to understand their athlete, coaches prioritized spending quality time with them and involving parents in their tennis journeys to ensure the athlete received appropriate support on, as well as off court. Additionally, it appeared that coaches used the skills of emotional intelligence to effectively manage their athlete, their parents, and their own emotions to improve the coach-athlete relationship. These findings provide detailed insight into how coaches can build a unique relationship with each athlete that continuously meets their evolving needs. Overall, these findings can provide high performance coaches and coach education programs with important knowledge on how to develop a deep understanding and strong connection with athletes"--
