The Buffalo Central Terminal as a Beacon for the Community

Book Description
This thesis examines the past, present and potential future of the Buffalo Central Terminal, and how the Central Terminal's rise and fall has affected the East Side neighborhood, particularly its economic value and racial divisions. This thesis, through evaluating changes in both the terminal and the neighborhood, will define the terminal's impact on the neighborhood. In general, many ideas for the reuse of the Central Terminal have been raised: casino, hotel, mall, new train station, and so on. These ideas for reuse are mostly focused upon profiting from the building itself. However, I believe that it is arguably more important to examine the relationship between the Central Terminal and the surrounding neighborhood than its intrinsic value. Since the Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) has bought the terminal, there have been fewer worries about vandalism, and less controversy about the decision to maintain or demolish the building. However, the problem still remains to develop harmony between the future of the terminal and the neighborhood. As study of the cultural industry is increasingly utilized in developing state-of-art city or community development, this discussion examines previous related examples and seeks ways in which reusing the terminal can revitalize the whole community.
