Book Description
Excerpt from British Salt-Water Fishes The study of life in the seas has a practical bearing on British industrial supremacy that cannot perhaps be claimed for any other branch of zoology, for the arts of the stock-breeder and poultry-farmer have long since passed out of the domain of the laboratory into that of technical education. In our sea-fisheries, however, we have a great industry, already marvellously developed during the past fifty years, and capable, with proper care, of yet further growth and improvement in the near future. More and more is the administration of this industry dependent on the researches of the marine laboratory. The causes which lead to fluctuations in the supply by prompting irregular and hitherto immeasurable migrations of important fishes from one coast to another; the meaning of "over-fishing" and the nature of the measures necessary for its control; the difficulty in obtaining bait, - these and other problems it is the business of the marine biologist to solve. This, the fifth volume of the "Woburn Library," makes no pretence to throw any new light on these matters. All that has been attempted is to summarise the habits and appearance, the distribution and the migrations of every fish yet described as "British." Even before it is in the hands of the public there may be new species in the British list, for only while the last sheets were passing through the press our gobies were enriched by the discovery in Cornwall of a species larger than any hitherto admitted as belonging to this country. Book Description
Excerpt from British Fresh Water Fishes It only remains for me to express my thanks to those gentlemen who have rendered me assistance in procuring specimens, or otherwise helping me. I must especially thank Dr. A. Gunther, of the British Museum - the highest living ichthyological authority* - for permission to make use of the Plates in T/zc Proceedings of Zoological Society of London, (1862, 1863, illustrating his papers on the British species of Charr; I have also to thank the Council of that Society for granting me the same permission. I have been fortunate enough to see and handle all the British Charrs, and specimens of all the species have been before the artist engaged in this work, but the Plates above named were found most useful in giving the characteristic colouration which specimens some days out of the water, or specimens preserved in spirits, almost invariably lose. I have also, through the kindness of Dr. Gunther, had opportunities of examining specimens of various fish in the British Museum; and the artist has been able to take figures of some species which are either rare, or which I failed to procure for myself. Book Description
Excerpt from Handbook of the Marine and Fresh Water Fishes of the British Islands: Including an Enumeration of Every Species This handbook has at the same time been compiled with the view of providing a complete reference catalogue or index to the fine series of spirit-preserved British marine and freshwater fishes collected by Dr. Francis Day, which after exhibition in their present position in the East Quadrant will be given to the nation, and placed perma hently on view in the Buckland Fish Museum. This museum, it is hopefully anticipated, will on the close of the Exhibition be enriched by many kindred acquisitions. As will be observed, the numbers quoted in these pages in con secutive order after the popular and technical titles of each fish, coincide with the same numbers inscribed on the labels attached to the j ars which contain the above-named fish collection, while an extended special description of the individual specimens thus exhibited is frequently given in the text. In like manner, by way of exemplifying certain rare forms, not in the Day Collection, and the larger sizes to which our indigenous fishes not unfrequently attain, reference is constantly made to the magnificent series of coloured plaster casts prepared by the late Mr. F rank Buckland, and to the many preserved specimens contained in the Buckland Museum, now thrown open to the public in conjunction with the Exhibition Courts.
