Book Description
Britsh Columbia Bizarreis a fascinating and eclectic mix of tales, snippets, historical facts, fancies and misconceptions teased from the history of British Columbia. No one should read this book to obtain a balanced view of the province's history. It ignores the important people and trends that contributed to BC's story, and instead favours the often strange, sometimes wonderful, and frequently insignificant events and people that make this province a storyteller's dream. Amuse yourself with tales of the brothels, bowdy houses and bagnios that existed in every town, the wild camels of Vancouver Island, communists (well, sort of), duels to the death and goose-races. And if that isn't enough, fill your boots with a potpourri of editorial feuds, gamblers and professional hangmen, lepers and lynching, and, let's not forget, angry moose. Sure to delight and surprise, British Columbia Bizarreis a wild safari through provincial history that ill confuse your assumptions and tickle your taste for the unusual.

Book Description
During the first half of this century, about fifty non-Canadian private boys' schools existed in British Columbia, virtually all of them founded on the principles of private education in Britain and intended to serve the offspring of British settlers. In this book Jean Barman explains the appeal of the British model of education, re-creates the ethos of private school life, and analyzes the effect of these schools on the social fabric of the province.

Book Description
Fort Steele began in 1864 as the site of John Galbraith's ferry, which transported eager gold seekers across the Kootenay River to nearby Wild Horse Creek. Major Sam Steele's "D" Division of the North West Mounted Police built Kootenay Post here in 1887 and helped alleviate tensions between white settlers and the Native Ktunaxa people. With all disputes settled peacefully and Steele recalled to Alberta to take on a new challenge, the appreciative residents renamed the town in 1888 to honour the highly regarded Mountie. As more settlers came, trails became roads. In summer, riverboats ran north and south to link with railways. Government offices made Fort Steele the administrative centre for East Kootenay. A bustling business community developed, and a newspaper was born. A school, three churches, an Opera House, and a hospital soon followed. Fort Steele boomed until the BC Southern Railway bypassed it. Naomi Miller, a local resident and interpreter at Fort Steele Heritage Town, provides many insights into the lives of the citizens of the town and district.
