Book Description
Your vessel may be equipped with the most advanced technology and the most powerful engines, but the failure to apply the basic principles of bridge resource management can still prevent you from getting where you are going. Satellite systems, ARPA, electronic charts, AIS, sophisticated communication equipment and integrated navigational systems—all these advanced technologies provide valuable capabilities. But accidents still happen, and they usually involve human error. This simple fact has made Bridge Resource Management (BRM) training a requirement for watchkeepers worldwide. Bridge Resource Management for Small Ships: The Watchkeeper’s Manual for Limited-Tonnage Vessels is the first book to address the unique needs of operators of small ships (limited-tonnage vessels) including tugs, ferries, yachts, and other passenger-carrying vessels. Features: Case histories to illustrate important points A complete course in BRM, suited for studying on your own as well as a complement to your classwork Topics include: Introduction to BRM, Standard Operating Procedures, Passage Planning, Implementing the Passage Plan, Building a Passage Plan, Situational Awareness and Human Factors, including: Overreliance, Distraction, Stress, Fatigue, Complacency, and Transition; and Human Interactions, including Communications, Teams and Teamwork, Decision Making and Leadership, and Human Error

Book Description
This first book takes me from my early days at the Australian Defence Force Academy when considering women to be equal in the forces was relatively new. Similarly, the Australian Defence Force Academy was still generally a new establishment, with the doors opening in 1986. I arrived in 1999, when it was the first year that there was such a high number of females in the intake. The years at the Australian Defence Force Academy were unique for a female and, in some respects, quite challenging. These challenges provided the grounding for our future careers. This first part takes me from my Australian Defence Force Academy days, my introduction to sea life, and participation in development of policy for ships and submarine being designed for the embarkment of women, my life at sea and future life in intelligence. I was to go on to be the senior watch officer and acting operations officer for the Australian Joint Intelligence Centre Watch Floor, where I was briefing admirals and generals on a daily basis. I also gained some valuable NSW police friends that provided me with unique experiences at a time they were going under corruption review. It was a challenging road, where I worked alongside clearance divers and submariners, experienced sexual abuse, and was later rewarded with a representational posting to Hawaii. Along my journey, I have met some remarkable people and some manipulators that hid behind the uniform. It was these very experiences, I believe, that led to my change in life, which can only be described as a comedy of errors, with myself ending up in the Middle East basically living on the streets after completing seventeen years in the Royal Australian Navy (Intelligence), Master of Islamic Studies and Masters of International Relations (Nuclear Security), and being placed in prison in Austria only to end up working for the Australian government in Australia training corrections staff and prisoners and again facing life on the streets. Apparently my studies, experiences, and skills do not mean anything in Australia.

Book Description
A practical and user-friendly guide to the collision regulations, with full interpretations of the rules and clear diagrams. A thorough understanding of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (ColRegs) is essential for a wide range of professionals as well as amateur mariners. Written in legal text rather than easy to understand terminology, it is not a surprise that the Colregs are subject to gross misunderstanding and confusion. This makes this a difficult area for the thousands of mariners who need to learn, understand and remember them. This handbook is the answer. Expert marine training director Simon Jinks provides straightforward explanations of the complex situations that the Regulations discuss. He gives simple and comprehensive interpretation of the ColRegs rule by rule, giving students and professionals the clarity they need for exam prep and dealing with real-life situations. Colour illustrations of all lights and shapes, and clear diagrams provide additional support for students. The handbook also includes chapters on bridge watch-keeping, radar plotting and techniques for answering ColRegs questions in MCA exam conditions. It shows you where other maritime regulations work hand-in-hand with ColRegs. Simon Jinks is an experienced teacher of ColRegs to students who are studying for MCA Masters, OOW, Boat master and Chief Mates exams, plus those who are studying for RYA Yachtmasters and IYT Master of Yacht Qualifications and want to have an in-depth knowledge. The book adapts the author's teaching notes, developed over many years, with added extras around the subject to help in greater understanding.
