Book Description
The idea for this story came out of a viral Instagram Reel I made about how moms are often so consumed with the needs of their families that they have no space to even think their own thoughts anymore. The video was an encouragement to husbands to step up and share in more of the household work, and to see themselves as guardians of their wife’s personhood. I had reels that had a few thousand views, this video went to 4 million views in under 2 weeks. The responses were overwhelming. It was a video addressed to men, but it resonated with literally millions of women. I got comments like, “My marriage wouldn't have ended if my husband done this.” “I’m crying because you said what I’ve been feeling so long but never found words to say.” “How can I talk to my husband about this?” There is much more to say on the topic than can even be said in a book let alone a 1minute Instagram video. The purpose of this story is to help people start having the conversation. That has to be the first step. It was heartbreakingly clear that there is an aloneness that many women feel but have no place to start from to address it. That is why I wrote this story. It is for husbands and wives to read together to start having this conversation and create a shift towards healing and balance in their marriage. there are things on both sides of the table that are hard to say, and extremely hard to hear. While it was women who commented on the reel, this story is written by a man and so also addresses the heart of men who feel alone inside their marriage. My hope is that by hearing it through the lives of David and Janie, it will be easier to hear without being offending or getting defensive. My hope is that this book will be a gateway towards empathy.

Nikki has already taken on the Hollises—one of L.A.’s most powerful families—for murdering her half sister, Peyton. However, Nikki’s next steps are clouded by the gray of uncertainty. Before she knows it, Nikki is on the trail of a cold case that couldn’t be any more personal—the death of her mother. Book Description
"[We need] a grassroots, bottom-up movement that understands the challenge in front of us, and then organizes against monopoly power in communities across this country. This book is a blueprint for that organizing. In these pages, you will learn how monopolies and oligopolies have taken over almost every aspect of American life, and you will also learn about what can be done to stop that trend before it is too late." —From the foreword by Bernie Sanders. A passionate attack on the monopolies that are throttling American democracy. Every facet of American life is being overtaken by big platform monopolists like Facebook, Google, and Bayer (which has merged with the former agricultural giant Monsanto), resulting in a greater concentration of wealth and power than we've seen since the Gilded Age. They are evolving into political entities that often have more influence than the actual government, bending state and federal legislatures to their will and even creating arbitration courts that circumvent the US justice system. How can we recover our freedom from these giants? Anti-corruption scholar and activist Zephyr Teachout has the answer: Break 'Em Up. This book is a clarion call for liberals and leftists looking to find a common cause. Teachout makes a compelling case that monopolies are the root cause of many of the issues that today's progressives care about; they drive economic inequality, harm the planet, limit the political power of average citizens, and historically-disenfranchised groups bear the brunt of their shameful and irresponsible business practices. In order to build a better future, we must eradicate monopolies from the private sector and create new safeguards that prevent new ones from seizing power. Through her expert analysis of monopolies in several sectors and their impact on courts, journalism, inequality, and politics, Teachout offers a concrete path toward thwarting these enemies of working Americans and reclaiming our democracy before it’s too late.

Book Description
From journalist and historian Richard Kreitner, a "powerful revisionist account"of the most persistent idea in American history: these supposedly United States should be broken up (Eric Foner). The novel and fiery thesis of Break It Up is simple: The United States has never lived up to its name—and never will. The disunionist impulse may have found its greatest expression in the Civil War, but as Break It Up shows, the seduction of secession wasn’t limited to the South or the nineteenth century. It was there at our founding and has never gone away. With a scholar’s command and a journalist’s curiosity, Richard Kreitner takes readers on a revolutionary journey through American history, revealing the power and persistence of disunion movements in every era and region. Each New England town after Plymouth was a secession from another; the thirteen colonies viewed their Union as a means to the end of securing independence, not an end in itself; George Washington feared separatism west of the Alleghenies; Aaron Burr schemed to set up a new empire; John Quincy Adams brought a Massachusetts town’s petition for dissolving the United States to the floor of Congress; and abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison denounced the Constitution as a pro-slavery pact with the devil. From the “cold civil war” that pits partisans against one another to the modern secession movements in California and Texas, the divisions that threaten to tear America apart today have centuries-old roots in the earliest days of our Republic. Richly researched and persuasively argued, Break It Up will help readers make fresh sense of our fractured age.

Book Description
A Washington Post Bestseller An entirely fresh approach to ending the high school dropout crisis is revealed in this groundbreaking chronicle of unprecedented transformation in a city notorious for its "failing schools" In eighth grade, Eric thought he was going places. But by his second semester of freshman year at Hancock High, his D's in Environmental Science and French, plus an F in Mr. Castillo's Honors Algebra class, might have suggested otherwise. Research shows that students with more than one semester F during their freshman year are very unlikely to graduate. If Eric had attended Hancock—or any number of Chicago's public high schools—just a decade earlier, chances are good he would have dropped out. Instead, Hancock's new way of responding to failing grades, missed homework, and other red flags made it possible for Eric to get back on track. The Make-or-Break Year is the largely untold story of how a simple idea—that reorganizing schools to get students through the treacherous transitions of freshman year greatly increases the odds of those students graduating—changed the course of two Chicago high schools, an entire school system, and thousands of lives. Marshaling groundbreaking research on the teenage brain, peer relationships, and academic performance, journalist turned communications expert Emily Krone Phillips details the emergence of Freshman OnTrack, a program-cum-movement that is translating knowledge into action—and revolutionizing how teachers grade, mete out discipline, and provide social, emotional, and academic support to their students. This vivid description of real change in a faulty system will captivate anyone who cares about improving our nation's schools; it will inspire educators and families to reimagine their relationships with students like Eric, and others whose stories affirm the pivotal nature of ninth grade for all young people. In a moment of relentless focus on what doesn't work in education and the public sphere, Phillips's dramatic account examines what does.

Book Description
In the genre of humour, this is a book about a television station located in the centre of Glasgow. Scottish Television Ltd. occupied an entire city block. It consisted of three studios plus one tiny continuity studio. All the administration offices were located there too. Sometimes it was a magical place to work. Other times it could drive you up the wall. I left in 1973 to spend a year at Granada Television. I never really settled in Manchester, and the opportunity of a floor manager job brought me back to STV in 1974. I was there from 1968-1973 and from 1974-2002. This book is written from the perspective of the factory floor, or perhaps that should be "studio floor". There are no boardroom matters featured. We're not interested in share prices or profit margins. The narrative never goes higher than the second floor. I was usually present at the time the anecdotes occurred. If I wasn't, then I knew and trusted someone who was.
