Book Description
Excerpt from On the Borderland I dare not precisely name the scene of this story. Somewhere betwixt the tropics stands a mud-built ruinous town, very mean, dirty, and unwholesome. Low green hills and woods lie behind it, and a grey sea before. In times not long past fleets used to ride beyond the surf, and rich caravans started daily for the inland wilds. That glory has departed, but its ruins amaze the stranger to-day. Amidst the ragged, sun-bleached thatch of negro hovels, lofty walls stand red and crumbling, with windowless eyes that blink towards the ocean. Down at the water's edge, built upon rocks that clang and strain under the beating of the surf, stands a castle. Book Description
Excerpt from The Borderland She moved, and he followed - not too grace fully, because the children were revolving in a circle about them. Some of the expressions of regret sent after them were of a nature that apparently contained as much condensed local humour as those chalked at intervals upon the pavement. And John Laverock seemed to expect the woman at his side to bear that as easily as himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Borderland Studies Of the following Sketches, "Children of Boreas" and "Upon the Advantage of being a Scot," appeared in Mr. Greenwood's Anti-Jacobin, "Our Village," and "With the North Countrie Methodies," in the National Observer, while of the Tales, "The Elder of North Quay" is but the "second name," to use an old Quaker term, of "The Pearl of Hafiz," which appeared in the pages of the Gentleman's Magazine. The Author here desires to express his thanks to the editors of the above periodicals for their courteous permission to reprint these articles. The remainder of the volume consists of fresh matter. And now, lest the reader should shrewdly suspect the Author of endeavouring, under a specious title, to fobb off, like the tricksy auctioneer, an "odd lot" of articles upon his credulity, a few words may perhaps be permitted concerning the Genesis of the book. Finding that the above-mentioned sketches had met with some approbation, it occurred to the Author to increase their number and to add thereto a like quantity of Tales, which should illustrate the characteristics of the North Countrie Folk, previously dealt with realistically, in romantic or idealistic fashion, for he believed that the hard and resolute, rugged and tenacious character of the race was well adapted to this purpose, and at the same time he conceived the project to possess some degree of novelty. The ancient temper of the country - that perfervidum ingeninm - to which the Northumbrian, equally with the Scot, may lay claim, though it may have changed its direction, still survives to this present with unabated force. As formerly he was amongst the last energetically to support the jns divinum of the Stuarts, so now he is amongst the first as keenly to uphold the modern theory of the jus divinum of the working man. Book Description
Excerpt from Borderland, Vol. 1 of 3: A Country-Town Chronicle Rather sombre contrast to the woods which were behind it, and the terraces which sloped down from its front to the river side T he name of the house was Thors garth many a spot hereabouts bore some name reminiscent of long-past Danish occupation and Scandinavian paganism. It was a characteristic giving a peculiar flavour to the language and nomenclature of the whole country-side, and one, too, which has been sweetly sung by at least one of our English poets. With this fact, these four particular boys were probably unacquainted, and it is more than probable that if they had known all about it they would have cared less than nothing for the circumstance. What could it matter to them that, a little further down the stream, that sweet spot where they loved to wade in the shallows, and not far from which noisy Greta came tumbling and laughing into the arms of sedater Tees - where the numerous wasps' nests were to be found.
