La fede cattolica degli Svizzeri era genuina, semplice, integra. Nessun di loro avrebbe pensato neppur per sogno a discutere la legittimita del papato. I papi erano allora creduti tutti al loro posto per diritto divino, e tutti virtuosi, tutti consacrati alla loro spi ritualemissione. Gravemente colpevole sarebbe stato ritenuto chi avesse osato mettere in dubbio la santita della vita de' cardinali, de' vescovi, de' prelati della Corte romana. Ma ecco i soldati tornare in patria dal loro servizio all'estero: eccoli raccontare un mondo di cose equivoche, sconce, orride, relative ai frati, alle monache, ai preti, ai cardinali e perfino ai papi; ecco 1 grass prelati venire dall'italia in Svizzera a godersi la mitez za del clima, la salubrita delle acque e de' bagni, la grandiosita de' pano rami; cd eccoli condursi sfacciatamente come i mondani piu corrotti. Cosi la Svizzera di lingua tedesca ebbe Ulrico Zvinglio (1484 quella di lingua francese ebbe Giovanni Calvino 11509 preceduto da Giovanni Farei, Antonio Froment, Pietro Viret; e le vallate di lingua italiana del Canton Grigione ebbero-i profughi, che cer carono in essa un rifugio dalla persecuzione di Roma, e vi recarono in con traccambio il dono ineffabile della Parola della Vita.
