Book Description
Sexual blackmail first reached public notice in the late eighteenth century when laws against sodomy were exploited by the unscrupulous to extort money from those they could entrap. Angus McLaren chronicles this parasitic crime, tracing its expansion in England and the United States through the Victorian era and into the first half of the twentieth century. The labeling of certain sexual acts as disreputable, if not actually criminal--abortion, infidelity, prostitution, and homosexuality--armed would-be blackmailers and led to a crescendo of court cases and public scandals in the 1920s and 1930s. As the importance of sexual respectability was inflated, so too was the spectacle of its loss. Charting the rise and fall of sexual taboos and the shifting tides of shame, McLaren enables us to survey evolving sexual practices and discussions. He has mined the archives to tell his story through a host of fascinating characters and cases, from male bounders to designing women, from badger games to gold diggers, from victimless crimes to homosexual outing. He shows how these stories shocked, educated, entertained, and destroyed the lives of their victims. He also demonstrates how muckraking journalists, con men, and vengeful women determined the boundaries of sexual respectability and damned those considered deviant. Ultimately, the sexual revolution of the 1960s blurred the long-rigid lines of respectability, leading to a rapid decline of blackmail fears. This fascinating view of the impact of regulating sexuality from the late Victorian Age to our own time demonstrates the centrality of blackmail to sexual practices, deviance, and the law.

Book Description
A practical guide to better communication that will break the blackmail cycle for good, by one of the nation's leading therapists, Susan Forward. “Breathe a sigh of relief! Susan Forward helps you identify and correct an intensely destructive and confusing pattern of relating with those you love. I highly recommend this important book!"—Susan Jeffers, Ph.D., author of Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway "If you really loved me..." "After all I've done for you..." "How can you be so selfish..." Do any of the above sound familiar? They're all examples of emotional blackmail, a powerful form of manipulation in which people close to us threaten to punish us for not doing what they want. Emotional blackmailers know how much we value our relationships with them. They know our vulnerabilities and our deepest secrets. They are our mothers, our partners, our bosses and coworkers, our friends and our lovers. And no matter how much they care about us, they use this intimate knowledge to give themselves the payoff they want: our compliance. Susan Forward knows what pushes our hot buttons. Just as John Gray illuminates the communications gap between the sexes in Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, and Harriet Lerner describes an intricate dynamic in The Dance of Anger, so Susan Forward presents the anatomy of a relationship damaged by manipulation, and gives readers an arsenal of tools to fight back.

Book Description
Black Gold and Blackmail seeks to explain why great powers adopt such different strategies to protect their oil access from politically motivated disruptions. In extreme cases, such as Imperial Japan in 1941, great powers fought wars to grab oil territory in anticipation of a potential embargo by the Allies; in other instances, such as Germany in the early Nazi period, states chose relatively subdued measures like oil alliances or domestic policies to conserve oil. What accounts for this variation? Fundamentally, it is puzzling that great powers fear oil coercion at all because the global market makes oil sanctions very difficult to enforce. Rosemary A. Kelanic argues that two variables determine what strategy a great power will adopt: the petroleum deficit, which measures how much oil the state produces domestically compared to what it needs for its strategic objectives; and disruptibility, which estimates the susceptibility of a state's oil imports to military interdiction—that is, blockade. Because global markets undercut the effectiveness of oil sanctions, blockade is in practice the only true threat to great power oil access. That, combined with the devastating consequences of oil deprivation to a state's military power, explains why states fear oil coercion deeply despite the adaptive functions of the market. Together, these two variables predict a state's coercive vulnerability, which determines how willing the state will be to accept the costs and risks attendant on various potential strategies. Only those great powers with large deficits and highly disruptible imports will adopt the most extreme strategy: direct control of oil through territorial conquest.

Book Description
Popular philosopher and leftist rabble-rouser Slavoj Zizek looks at one of the most desperate situations of our time: the current refugee crisis overwhelming Europe In this short yet stirring book, Slavoj Zizek—called “the Elvis of cultural history” by The New York Times—argues that accepting all comers or blocking all entry are both untenable solutions . . . But there is a third option. Today, hundreds of thousands of people, desperate to escape war, violence and poverty, are crossing the Mediterranean to seek refuge in Europe. Our response, from our protected Western European standpoint, argues Slavoj Zizek, offers two versions of ideological blackmail: either we open our doors as widely as possible; or we try to pull up the drawbridge. Both solutions are bad, states Zizek. They merely prolong the problem, rather than tackling it. The refugee crisis also presents an opportunity, a unique chance for Europe to redefine itself: but, if we are to do so, we have to start raising unpleasant and difficult questions. We must also acknowledge that large migrations are our future: only then can we commit to a carefully prepared process of change, one founded not on a community that see the excluded as a threat, but one that takes as its basis the shared substance of our social being. The only way, in other words, to get to the heart of one of the greatest issues confronting Europe today is to insist on the global solidarity of the exploited and oppressed. Maybe such solidarity is a utopia. But, warns Zizek, if we don't engage in it, then we are really lost. And we will deserve to be lost.

Book Description
Moral Blackmail: Coercion, Responsibility, and Global Justice identifies a novel kind of forced action, yet one that is relatively neglected in ethics and moral philosophy. Moral blackmail occurs when someone is forced to do something because someone else has made all its alternatives morally unacceptable. Ben Colburn explores moral blackmail by first examining existing theories of coercion, responsibility, and voluntary action, and defending its existence from various sceptical metaethical arguments, before arguing that moral blackmail's significance is not limited to the interpersonal: it is also endemic in the structures of distribution and decision-making at the largest scale. To show this, he considers two problems in intergenerational and international justice: the problem of ‘passing the buck’ in environmental and population policies in the former, and the problem of ‘taking up the slack’ in situations of partial compliance with the demands of the latter. Recognising these as instances of moral blackmail writ large offers novel solutions to these long-standing philosophical problems, as well as offering proof in use of the account Colburn proposes. Moral Blackmail will be of interest to those studying and researching political philosophy, ethical theory, applied ethics, and politics.

Book Description
"If you really loved me, you would..." "I'll hurt myself if you don't do what I want." "You owe me after all I've done for you." "I'll tell everyone about your secrets if you don't…” Do these phrases sound familiar to you? The real meaning of these sentences, although it may trigger complex and confusing feelings, can be summed up in two simple words: emotional blackmail. Emotional blackmail is a covert form of aggression in which a person close to us threatens, directly or indirectly, to punish us if we don't meet their expectations. It's a powerful form of manipulation that can be used by anyone, including co-workers, parents, friends, and partners. Blackmailers can be cunning charmers and master manipulators. They may seem like kind and caring people at first, but they can quickly turn into a "black hole" willing to do anything to satisfy their needs. They are experts at making you feel guilty or obligated to them. They may use threats, tears, or guilt trips to get what they want. They may also play the victim or make you feel like you're the only one who can help them. Invisible chains that are hard to see and break can bind you to family, friends, colleagues, or partners. The blackmailer may seem selfish, devious, or mean, but this is often not the case. In reality, they may be struggling with their own emotional issues and using blackmail as a way to cope. Yes, I know this can be difficult to understand. If you know the gripping feeling of being emotionally blackmailed, then it's time to reassess how much you know about this form of manipulation. This book has everything you need to know about being the master of your own emotions and not letting anyone else take the reins. Here's a sneak peek at what you'll learn in this book: · Understand how emotional blackmail works and how to identify it. · Learn the red flags of emotional blackmail. · Recognize the characteristics that make you a target for emotional blackmail. · Understand how emotional blackmailers exploit attachment and codependency. · Recognize the five personality types commonly associated with emotional blackmail. · Learn the seven steps that emotional blackmailers use to control their victims. · Take steps to stop being a victim and safeguard your emotional well-being. · Understand the lasting impact of emotional blackmail on your emotions. · Address emotional blackmail in the context of the internet and social media. · Use assertive communication to resist emotional manipulation. · Build resilience to effectively counter emotional blackmail and thrive in relationships. They know your buttons and they'll keep pushing them if you don't stop them. If you are tired of the sickening pain of emotional blackmail, fear, guilt, obligation, shame, and other twisted mind games, do yourself a favor. Take a deep breath, relax that knot in your stomach, and pick up this book. It will protect you for life, and more importantly, it can break the invisible chain that binds you to your "blackmailer."

Book Description
Lambda Award 2015 for Best Gay Mystery! Josie O'Conner travels to San Francisco in 1951 to locate her gay brother, a private eye investigating a blackmail ring targeting lesbians and gay men. Jimmy's friends claim that just before he disappeared he became a rat, informing the cops on the bar community. Josie adopts Jimmy's trousers and wingtips, to clear his name, halt the blackmailers, and exact justice for too many queer corpses. Along the way she rubs shoulders with a sultry chanteuse running a dyke tavern called Pandora's Box, gets intimate with a red-headed madam operating a brothel from the Police Personnel Department, and conspires with the star of Finocchio's, a dive so disreputable it's off limits to servicemen — so every man in uniform pays a visit. Blackmail, My Love is an illustrated murder mystery deeply steeped in San Francisco's queer history, as established academic and first-time novelist Katie Gilmartin's diverse set of characters negotiate the risks of same-sex desire in a dangerous era. Set in such legendary locations as the Black Cat Cafe, the Fillmore, the Beat movement's North Beach, and the Tenderloin, Blackmail, My Love is a singular, stunning introduction to a new author and to gay noir.
