Excerpt from Black Gods, Green Islands The welcoming embrace of the sun invited them to join him for a morning walk through the forest. He was a warm host, leading them until the blue of deep forest slowly became, in his fullest power, a mottled smear of emerald. They came after a short walk to a large clearing beside which grew a holy mapou tree. It was a huge pylon that seemed to be an ancestor of the forest. Gionda stood before it and, lifting her delicate head, she bleated a call to its distant leaves. She pranced to its base and without lowering her head she withdrew. She turned left and bleated and, moving quickly, she circled the clearing, repeating her call. The hunter stood in the center of the clearing, watching the beauti ful creature move in the ritual. He looked up at the great tree, its trunk bound halfway by tie-tie vines. The parasite orchid fretted it with clusters of spiny leaves and sprays of pale yellow flowers. Above the vines the trunk was a smooth naked shaft of gray to near its top, where the branches and leaves burst into a dark green ball. The hunter remembered tales of his childhood that told of men who climbed such trees. In the leaves, it was said, they had seen the frowning faces of gods - they fell in one long cry of dying. In 1956 Harry Belafonte’s Calypso became the first LP to sell more than a million copies. For a few fleeting months, calypso music was the top-selling genre in the US—it even threatened to supplant rock and roll. Stolen Time provides a vivid cultural history of this moment and outlines a new framework—black fad performance—for understanding race, performance, and mass culture in the twentieth century United States. Vogel situates the calypso craze within a cycle of cultural appropriation, including the ragtime craze of 1890s and the Negro vogue of the 1920s, that encapsulates the culture of the Jim Crow era. He follows the fad as it moves defiantly away from any attempt at authenticity and shamelessly embraces calypso kitsch. Although white calypso performers were indeed complicit in a kind of imperialist theft of Trinidadian music and dance, Vogel argues, black calypso craze performers enacted a different, and subtly subversive, kind of theft. They appropriated not Caribbean culture itself, but the US version of it—and in so doing, they mocked American notions of racial authenticity. From musical recordings, nightclub acts, and television broadcasts to Broadway musicals, film, and modern dance, he shows how performers seized the ephemeral opportunities of the fad to comment on black cultural history and even question the meaning of race itself.

During the same period in which Derek Walcott was pouring immense physical, emotional, and logistical resources into the foundation of a viable first-rate West Indian theatre company and continuing to write his inimitable poetry, he was also busy writing newspaper reviews, chiefly for the Trinidad Guardian. His prodigious reviewing activity extended far beyond those areas with which one might most readily associate his interests and convic¬tions. As Gordon Rohlehr once prescient¬ly observed, “If one wants to see a quoti¬dian workaday Walcott, one should go back to [his] well over five hundred arti¬cles, essays and reviews on painting, cinema, calypso, carnival, drama and lite¬rature,” articles which “reveal a rich, vari¬ous, witty and scrupulous intelligence in which generous humour counterpoints acerbity.” These articles capture the vital¬ity of Caribbean culture and shed addi-tional light on the aesthetic preoccupa¬tions expressed in Walcott’s essays pub¬lished in journals. The editors have exam¬ined the corpus of Walcott’s journalistic activity from its beginnings in 1950 to its peak in the early 1970s, and have made a generous selection of material from the Guardian, along with occasional pieces from such sources as Public Opinion (Kingston) and The Voice of St. Lucia (Castries).
