Book Description
Excerpt from Bird of Dawn, and Other Lyrics The work included herein has been done under difficulties. It is the grist of the years from the publication of Mary Magdalene and Other Poems, in 1914, until now. Some of the friends who inspired my work are dead, - grief has knocked at the door. Sam Wood, natur alist, has gone along. Emmanuel Tasse, of Ottawa, whose wife com posed and brought out our war song, died the following year. The Bridge of Gold was written for him whilst he was still with us. Of our boys who went to the war some of the dearest and best are dead or missing. My thanks to Dr. Watson for his nature poetry, which suggested my title piece, The Bird of Dawn. He made the first copy on his own typewriter in red letter. Again, to John Garvin, of Canadian Poets fame, that unwearying philanthropist to every one of us, genius or scribbler, a very personal feeling of kindness because of his tactful effort to find me work when I was poor and dejected. Excerpt from Lyrics of the Dawn Where all Of the round of the ruling year As a summer mere the skies are clear, And only the flowers of life take flame From the great white sun in the dazzling dome And though dew ne'er gathers and rain ne'er falls, There are waters that circle the shining walls, And break into bubble and toss into foam Round the city called Hammarizere. Book Description
Excerpt from Lyrics and Sonnets For vanished love and hope. Be still, Says Patience; Youth will not return. His songs were once of the sunrise They are of the sunrise yet, With the birds to the dawn full-throating And the green marsh-grasses wet, And the wisps of pink clouds floating Like birds of a higher wing To him it is ever sunrise, It is always youth and spring. He sings to his sweetheart, singing; And this is his song's chief theme It is good to be men as we are men, And to front the sun's first beam Naked and frank, What then! Living our life is the thing! His lust is a wholesome singing; It is always youth and spring. Sorrow keeps dogging us always Drown what we can in drink! What overreaches us, scorn it; Pain cannot make a man shrink. For the sake of the joys We've borne Life with its sudden sting; And so were we glad to always, It is always youth and spring! Book Description
Excerpt from The Bird in Song: A Collection of Poems For reasons of space I have omitted narrative poems and, with the exception of Lovelace's The Falcon, also the more lengthy descriptive pieces. Finally Edgar Poe's Raven will not be found here. With all its inimitable imaginative touches it appears to me rather a study in the supernatural than a poem suggested by a living bird. I feel that some explanation is needed in these scientific days for including the bat among birds. The best plea I can urge on this ground is, that the bulk Of this little book being made up Of the works of past masters, some splendid precedents for such inaccuracies could certainly be discovered from the same source. Book Description
Excerpt from The Golden Dawn: And Other Stories Sitting in my quiet study, and looking dreamily out from my thought-window, I see around me little graceful forms, with dan cing feet and dimpled hands. There are beautiful beaming eyes, lumi nous with eager gladness, cheeks like the Spring rosebuds, and cherry lips that coax so winsomely for fairy tales. Again with curious warp and woof I weave the mystic story, and watch the vary ing light and shade that it across these childish faces. Book Description
Funny, poignant, and deeply moving, The Line Tender is a story of nature's enduring mystery and a girl determined to find meaning and connection within it. Wherever the sharks led, Lucy Everhart's marine-biologist mother was sure to follow. In fact, she was on a boat far off the coast of Massachusetts, collecting shark data when she died suddenly. Lucy was seven. Since then Lucy and her father have kept their heads above water--thanks in large part to a few close friends and neighbors. But June of her twelfth summer brings more than the end of school and a heat wave to sleepy Rockport. On one steamy day, the tide brings a great white--and then another tragedy, cutting short a friendship everyone insists was "meaningful" but no one can tell Lucy what it all meant. To survive the fresh wave of grief, Lucy must grab the line that connects her depressed father, a stubborn fisherman, and a curious old widower to her mother's unfinished research on the Great White's return to Cape Cod. If Lucy can find a way to help this unlikely quartet follow the sharks her mother loved, she'll finally be able to look beyond what she's lost and toward what's left to be discovered. ★"Confidently voiced."—Kirkus Reviews, starred ★"Richly layered."—Publishers Weekly, starred ★"A hopeful path forward."—Booklist, starred ★"Life-affirming."—BCCB, starred ★"Big-hearted." —Bookpage, starred ★“Will appeal to just about everyone.” – SLC, starred ★"Exquisitely, beautifully real."—Shelf Awareness, starred
