Book Description
Molecular Approaches to Gene Expression and Protein Structure documents the proceedings of the international symposium ""Gene and Protein Structure"" held in conjunction with the 22nd annual meeting of the Chilean Society of Biology at the campus of the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia, Chile, December 1979. Organized by the Chilean Society of Biology, the symposium was designed not only to explore the concepts involved in the evolution of genes and protein structure but to bring together scientists from the United States and their counterparts from the Chilean academic institutions. The subject matter presented in this book reflects the research interests and experiences of the participating authors. The emphasis, in general, is on molecular and regulatory processes and cellular control mechanisms. The chapters include reviews on selected areas of interest written in a manner intelligible to newcomers to biological research, and present an in-depth analysis of the work with a balanced presentation of facts, concepts, and projections.

Book Description
Biochemistry of the Glycosidic Linkage: An Integrated View is a collection of papers presented at The Pan-American Association of Biochemical Societies Symposium, held in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina on November 8-11, 1971. This symposium is organized as a tribute to Luis F. Leloir and his contributions in the field glycosidic linkage. This book is divided into six sessions encompassing 57 chapters. The opening session discusses the role of biochemical mechanisms in the glycosidic linkage formation. The following sessions examine the metabolic functions of some disaccharides, such as trehalose, sucrose, glucose, and starch. These sessions also look into the biosynthesis, function, and properties of carbohydrates containing polymers. The discussion then shifts to the control of enzyme biosynthesis involved in the glycosidic linkage metabolism, with particular emphasis on alpha-amylase, lactose synthetase, phosphorylase, and neuraminidase enzymes. Another session is devoted to the regulatory mechanisms and control of glycogen metabolism. The concluding session covers the genetic analysis and biochemical characterization of the enzymes involved in the glycosidic linkage metabolism. Biochemists and carbohydrate researchers will find this text invaluable.

Book Description
The brine shrimp Artemia has become an important experimental system for studies of the developmental process. In recent years the shrimp has yielded considerable information on the pattern of development, bio chemistry, and gene structure and expression of crustaceans. This book is a compilation of research activity from twenty five of the most active re search laboratories working with brine shrimp in the above areas. It also represents the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Montreal, Canada, August 11-13, 1988. The book contains twenty nine full papers covering the major areas discussed at the workshop. In addition, one page abstracts representing seventeen poster presentations which were given at the workshop, and which were deemed to be most relevant to the theme of the book, are included. These are designated with an [al in the Table of Contents following the title of each paper. A considerable amount of discussion which took place during the workshop has not been included in the book because of space limitations. However, the editors will endeavour to make some of this in formation available at a later date through the Artemia Newsletter. In addition to the high percentage of invited speakers who attended and contributed to the workshop, the organizers would like to thank a number of participants who made valuable contributions to the major dis cussion sessions. These include: John Freeman, Michael Horst, Herman Slegers, Jack Vaughn, Frank Conte, Sandy McLennan, Clive Trotman and Patrick Sorgeloos.

Book Description
Studies in Natural Products Chemistry, Volume 83 covers the synthesis or testing and recording of the medicinal properties of natural products, providing cutting-edge accounts of fascinating developments in the isolation, structure elucidation, synthesis, biosynthesis, and pharmacology of a diverse array of bioactive natural products. Natural products in the plant and animal kingdom offer a huge diversity of chemical structures that are the result of biosynthetic processes that have been modulated over the millennia through genetic effects. With the rapid developments in spectroscopic techniques and accompanying advances in high-throughput screening techniques, it has become possible to isolate and then determine the structures and biological activity of natural products rapidly, thus opening up exciting opportunities in the field of new drug development to the pharmaceutical industry. - Focuses on the chemistry of bioactive natural products - Contains contributions by leading authorities in the field - Presents sources of new pharmacophores
