Determination of a Degree Day Model for Citrus Peelminer, Marmara Gulosa (Guillén and Davis) Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae

Book Description
Marmara gulosa is a pest that must be accounted for in a comprehensive management program for successful citrus production. Management techniques vary by life stage; insecticides have only been shown to be effective on eggs, and parasitoids preferentially use fourth and fifth instar larvae as hosts. The presence of multiple generations in one growing season makes precise timing of chemical treatments and natural enemy releases necessary to reduce populations. Developmental rate of M. gulosa at 17, 21, 25, 29, and 33°C was recorded. Linear regression analysis of developmental data approximated the lower developmental threshold 12.9°C and the upper developmental threshold 33°C. A preliminary degree day (DD) model based up laboratory data indicated that M. gulosa completes each generation at an accumulation of 320 DD. Laboratory developmental data were applied to a field study. Marmara gulosa was detected in the field at an average accumulation of approximately 320 DD post-biofix, using 12.9°C as the lower development threshold.
