Who Have Contributed to the Advancement of Medical Science, Vol. 1 College, Oxford, at which university he graduated. He took the degree of A. B. In 1787, M. A. In 1789, M. B. In 1790, and M.D. In 1794. He was elected a Fellow of the London College of Physicians also in 1794. Distinguished by the elegance of his manners, and the extent of his learn ing, it is not surprising that he should have excited attention in general society; and in March, 1795, be contracted a marriage with the Hon. Eliza beth Barbara St. John, third daughter of John, eleventh Lord St. John, and thus became established in the circle of the highest rank and fashion. Here his merits became duly appreciated, and he rapidly rose into notice as a medical practitioner. George III. Appointed him one of his physicians, and all other medical honours were now before him. By the death of his mother's cousin, Sir Charles Halford, of the county of Leicester, he became possessed of an ample fortune, and changed his name, in 1809, by Act of Parliament, from Vaughan to that of Halford, and by royal favour a Baronetcy was conferred upon him in September of the same year. John clarke, I had relied upon the authority of Watt, and inserted two works of which he could not have been the author, as they appeared in 1751. They are tracts relating to the employment of male practitioners in midwifery. The portrait of caius is from a mezzotint by Faber, taken from a picture in Gonville and Caius College. The autograph affixed is from a deed belong ing to the college, and for the fac-simile of which 1 am indebted to the learned master of the college. The portrait of dr. Radcliffe is from a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller, purchased from the collection of Dr. Mead by Dr. William Hunter, and now preserved in the Hunterian Museum at Glasgow. The autograph affixed to this plate is taken from a book in which he inserted his name when he first entered at the University of Oxford. The autograph of albinus is taken from a letter in the possession of Mr. Stone, mm, at the Royal College of Surgeons.
