Book Description
Excerpt from Biochemical Catalysts in Life and Industry: Proteolytic Enzymes All, so far as Chemistry yet permits us to say, have composi tions similar to those of the albuminoids. However, they are accompanied by mineral matter whose presence has been recog nized, in certain cases, as being useful, or even necessary as, for example, manganese in the process of oxidation, or calcium in the coagulation of blood so that one ends by asking if the rcle of these substances, in vital manifestations in general, is not even a greater one than has hitherto been supposed. The constant presence of iron in the hemoglobin, of magnesium in the chloro phyll, or of iodine in the thyroids, is perhaps an indication of unknown catalytic action, which would thus explain the physi ological importance of these substances, from the points of View of respiration, the assimilation of carbon dioxide and the normal functioning of the organism, respectively. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book Description
The impact of catalysis on the nation's economy is evidenced by the fact that catalytic technologies generate U.S. sales in excess of $400 billion per year and a net positive balance of trade of $16 billion annually. This book outlines recent accomplishments in the science and technology of catalysis and summarizes important likely challenges and opportunities on the near horizon. It also presents recommendations for investment of financial and human resources by industry, academe, national laboratories, and relevant federal agencies if the nation is to maintain continuing leadership in this fieldâ€"one that is critical to the chemical and petroleum processing industries, essential for energy-efficient means for environmental protection, and vital for the production of a broad range of pharmaceuticals.

Book Description
The whole range of biocatalysis, from a firm grounding in theoretical concepts to in-depth coverage of practical applications and future perspectives. The book not only covers reactions, products and processes with and from biological catalysts, but also the process of designing and improving such biocatalysts. One unique feature is that the fields of chemistry, biology and bioengineering receive equal attention, thus addressing practitioners and students from all three areas.
