Book Description
In recent years there has been an increasing need for transplantation, but the number of donor livers available has increased only slightly, despite intensive public relations activities. New concepts in the field of transplantation, for instance the transplantation of living donor organs or the splitting of organs, are urgently required, to safeguard the treatment of patients with severe liver disease. The development and clinical application of cell therapy for patients with liver disease could soon present a significant enhancement of the therapeutic options. The aim of such cell therapy is to repair or improve the biological function of the chronically and acutely damaged liver. Even though systematic trials are not available, individual case reports and small series already show promising clinical results. Present concepts of cell therapy for liver diseases based on the use of primary hepatocytes have recently been considerably extended through new data on the biology of stem cells. The adult haematopoetic stem cell as a pool for hepatocyte grafts - what would be the perspectives for the clinical application? This book is the proceedings of the Falk Symposium No. 126 on `Hepatocyte Transplantation' (Progress in Gastroenterology and Hepatology Part III) held in Hannover, Germany, October 2-3, 2001, and is a forum for basic research, but also for questions concerning clinical applications in the field of hepatocyte transplantation.

Book Description
Whereas other textbooks mix a clinical approach with large amounts of the basic science of gastroenterology, this book concentrates on providing practicing gastroenterologists with 100% clinically focused, evidence-based chapters on how to correctly diagnosis and treat all disorders of the digestive tract. Once again, the book is divided into 4 clear parts: Symptoms, Syndromes and Scenarios; Diseases of the Gut and Liver; Primer of Diagnostic Methods; and Primer of Treatments. An accompanying website contains more than 85 high-definition surgical videos of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, 300 MCQs written to mirror the American College of Gastroenterology postgraduate course exams, more than 35 management protocol charts for different diseases, and 850+ illustrations for use in scientific presentations.

Book Description
A complete, authoritative guide to the management and treatment of neonatal jaundice Care of the Jaundiced Neonate focuses exclusively on the scientific underpinnings of jaundice, as well as the care of the jaundiced neonate. Edited by three of the field’s most respected neonatal care experts, the book uniquely explains how the imbalance between bilirubin production and elimination leads to jaundice—and that hazardous levels of unconjugated bilirubin can cause kernicterus, or brain damage. In addition, you’ll find the most current and clinically relevant perspectives on the physiology, genetics, and treatment of neonatal jaundice and related hemolytic conditions. FEATURES Covers all aspects of neonatal jaundice—from the biochemistry of bilirubin production to kernicterus Begins with an in-depth examination of the complex gene-environment interactions of bilirubin-induced neurotoxicity and its role in neonatal jaundice Surveys bilirubin production and measurement, its various fractions, and the metabolism and transport of bilirubin Selected chapters highlight the physiology and epidemiology of neonatal unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia; bilirubin toxicity; prevention, screening, and postnatal management; phototherapy and other treatments; and prevention-related public policy. Concluding chapter provides an overview of the key issues surrounding the incidence of neonatal jaundice in low-middle income countries Includes informative review of risk assessment and treatment with phototherapy and other modalities provide key approaches to the effective clinical management of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia

Book Description
In the third edition of the Atlas of the Liver, the authors present (and evaluate) many crucial concepts regarding liver disease using photomicrographs, charts and, tables. The goal of the Atlas of the Liver is to augment comprehensive texts. Every major hepatic disease is thoroughly addressed, along with guidance as to the most efficient and effective ways to treat them. Dr. Willis Maddrey, along with 24 leading hepatologists, has interwoven concepts from fields such as molecular biology with the results of clinical observations and trials in order to facilitate efficient, accurate diagnosis and the use of effective therapy.

Book Description
In the past decade there has been a major sea change in the way disease is diagnosed and investigated due to the advent of high throughput technologies, such as microarrays, lab on a chip, proteomics, genomics, lipomics, metabolomics etc. These advances have enabled the discovery of new and novel markers of disease relating to autoimmune disorders, cancers, endocrine diseases, genetic disorders, sensory damage, intestinal diseases etc. In many instances these developments have gone hand in hand with the discovery of biomarkers elucidated via traditional or conventional methods, such as histopathology or clinical biochemistry. Together with microprocessor-based data analysis, advanced statistics and bioinformatics these markers have been used to identify individuals with active disease or pathology as well as those who are refractory or have distinguishing pathologies. New analytical methods that have been used to identify markers of disease and is suggested that there may be as many as 40 different platforms. Unfortunately techniques and methods have not been readily transferable to other disease states and sometimes diagnosis still relies on single analytes rather than a cohort of markers. There is thus a demand for a comprehensive and focused evidenced-based text and scientific literature that addresses these issues. Hence the formulation of Biomarkers in Disease The series covers a wide number of areas including for example, nutrition, cancer, endocrinology, cardiology, addictions, immunology, birth defects, genetics, and so on. The chapters are written by national or international experts and specialists.
