Book Description
This dissertation seeks to identify possible factors that might explain the relative success or lack of success of efforts to commercialize university-owned inventions. The analytic framework for this study is based on an entrepreneurial theory that claims that there is no best way to manage an organization, the optimal course is contingent upon the internal structure and the external situation. A review of the relevant literature shows that there has been a continuous effort to assess internal factors such as university reputation and university initiatives or how external factors such as government policy and local geography could affect technology transfer. Despite relevance, however, no empirical studies have examined the joint impact that internal and external factors might have on technology transfer. This dissertation makes an original contribution to the literature through empirical research on the joint effect of internal and external factors on technology transfer. After providing an overview of the Bayh-Dole Act and its effects on technology transfer within the U.S. universities, the institutional context of technology transfer in China including market-oriented reforms in the public and private sector in China, and PRC law governing technology transfer are considered. An empirical study of technology transfer activities of 111 Chinese universities using a multi-level regression model is used to assess the internal and external factors that influence technology transfer in China. The implications of that analysis for university technology transfer programs in China and other countries are then considere

Book Description
Since the early 1980s, universities in the United States have greatly expanded their patenting and licensing activities. The Congressional Joint Economic Committee, among other authorities, have argued that this surge contributed to the economic boom of the 1990s. And, many observers have attributed this trend to the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980. Using quantitative analysis and detailed case studies, this book tests that conventional wisdom and assesses the effects of the Act, examining the diverse channels through which commercialization has occurred over the 20th century and since the passage of the Act.

Book Description
The main purpose of the book is to discuss new trends in the dynamic geography of innovation and argue that in an era of increasing globalization, two trends seem quite dominant: rigid territorial models of innovation, and localized configurations of innovative activities. The book brings together scholars who are working on these topics. Rather than focusing on established concepts and theories, the book aims to question narrow explanations, rigid territorializations, and simplistic policy frameworks; it provides evidence that innovation, while not exclusively dependent on regional contexts, can be influenced by place-specific attributes. The book will bring together new empirical and conceptual work by an interdisciplinary group of leading scholars from areas such as economic geography, innovation studies, and political science. Based on recent discussions surrounding innovation systems of different types, it aims to synthesize state-of-the-art know-how and provide new perspectives on the role of innovation and knowledge creation in the global political economy.

Book Description
This volume assembles papers commissioned by the National Research Council's Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy (STEP) to inform judgments about the significant institutional and policy changes in the patent system made over the past two decades. The chapters fall into three areas. The first four chapters consider the determinants and effects of changes in patent "quality." Quality refers to whether patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) meet the statutory standards of patentability, including novelty, nonobviousness, and utility. The fifth and sixth chapters consider the growth in patent litigation, which may itself be a function of changes in the quality of contested patents. The final three chapters explore controversies associated with the extension of patents into new domains of technology, including biomedicine, software, and business methods.
