In Negotiating Opportunities, Jessica McCrory Calarco argues that the middle class has a negotiated advantage in school. Drawing on five years of ethnographic fieldwork, Calarco traces that negotiated advantage from its origins at home to its consequences at school. Through their parents' coaching, working-class students learn to follow rules and work through problems independently. Middle-class students learn to challenge rules and request assistance, accommodations, and attention in excess of what is fair or required. Teachers typically grant those requests, creating advantages for middle-class students. Calarco concludes with recommendations, advocating against deficit-oriented programs that teach middle-class behaviors to working-class students. Those programs ignore the value of working-class students' resourcefulness, respect, and responsibility, and they do little to prevent middle-class families from finding new opportunities to negotiate advantages in school.

The genitourinary system is closely related to the endocrine system. Some genitourinary organs are endocrine organs themselves. Over the past decades, the diagnosis and treatment on both endocrine and urological diseases have developed rapidly. Concerns regarding the normal growth, development, and physiological functions of the genitourinary system, as well as the pathogenesis and treatment of urinary diseases have been raised. The diseases from these two different systems belong to the specialties of internal medicine and surgery respectively. For example, prostate is regulated by androgen originates from testis, adrenal and even malignancies. Androgen deprivation therapy has definite effect on prostatic adenocarcinoma but may also develop castration resistance. The disorders of gonad and reproductive health are also implicated in hormone regulation, such as delayed hypogonadism. Many diseases such as Cushing's syndrome and aldosteronism are transdisciplinary. However, the research on the normal physiological function, and the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of both systems are short of cross-integration, resulting in a lack of close cooperation between physicians and surgeons. We are calling for more attention on the joint participation in multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment, as well as collaboration on basic research in the field of genitourinary and endocrine diseases.

But how exactly do the forces of rising inequality affect the educational attainment and life chances of low-income children? In Whither Opportunity? a distinguished team of economists, sociologists, and experts in social and education policy examines the corrosive effects of unequal family resources, disadvantaged neighborhoods, insecure labor markets, and worsening school conditions on K-12 education. This groundbreaking book illuminates the ways rising inequality is undermining one of the most important goals of public education—the ability of schools to provide children with an equal chance at academic and economic success. The most ambitious study of educational inequality to date, Whither Opportunity? analyzes how social and economic conditions surrounding schools affect school performance and children’s educational achievement. The book shows that from earliest childhood, parental investments in children’s learning affect reading, math, and other attainments later in life. Contributor Meredith Phillip finds that between birth and age six, wealthier children will have spent as many as 1,300 more hours than poor children on child enrichment activities such as music lessons, travel, and summer camp. Greg Duncan, George Farkas, and Katherine Magnuson demonstrate that a child from a poor family is two to four times as likely as a child from an affluent family to have classmates with low skills and behavior problems – attributes which have a negative effect on the learning of their fellow students. As a result of such disparities, contributor Sean Reardon finds that the gap between rich and poor children’s math and reading achievement scores is now much larger than it was fifty years ago. And such income-based gaps persist across the school years, as Martha Bailey and Sue Dynarski document in their chapter on the growing income-based gap in college completion. Analyzing the math achievement of elementary school children, Stephen Raudenbush, Marshall Jean, and Emily Art find that students learn less if they attend schools with high student turnover during the school year – a common occurrence in poor schools.
