Analytical procedures are routinely used for structural integrity of buildings, but for moisture control, designers still rely on rules of thumb, such as "install vapor retarders in cold climates on the inside and in warm climates on the exterior of thermal insulation." However, cold and warm climates are ill defined, large areas of the United States have warm summers and cold winters, and the rules do not recognize the effects of other materials in the thermal envelope. Analytical methods for determining the moisture movement in building envelopes are available. These methods can predict condensation, moisture content of layers and surface relative humidities; dynamic methods also predict the duration of moisture excursions, providing a basis for moisture damage risk assessment. Recognizing that practitioners are not generally trained to use available analytical tools, the Building Environment and Thermal Envelope Council (BETEC) has developed a tutorial on moisture analysis for building designers. The tutorial consists of a Moisture Primer, an Overview of Analysis Methods, and a training session on MOIST, a dynamic model developed by the National Institute for Standards and Technology. The paper outlines the need for the analytical approach to moisture control and summarizes the three sessions.

The articles presented in this Special Issue cover different aspects of the urban planning process, such as simulation, optimization or decision-making. The authors highlighted the importance of performing an integrated design of the district, considering different sectors, different energy vectors and different operation modes. In order to better integrate renewable and residual energy sources (R²ES), careful design of systems and storage solutions should be performed. Different storage solutions were tested, ranging from large-scale thermal energy storage to vehicle batteries or the thermal mass of buildings. Van der Heijde et al. (2019) proposed a two-layer design optimization algorithm to design a district heating network with solar thermal collectors, seasonal thermal energy storage and excess heat injection. Pajot et al. (2019) also performed an optimization of the sizing and control of energy systems in a district equipped with heat pumps, with thermal energy storage or thermal mass utilization. A hybrid distribution system, coupling the thermal and electrical networks, was proposed by Widl et al. (2019). Arnaudo et al. (2019) used the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) concept to decrease the overloading of the electrical distribution network during heat pump operation. Finally, Kazmi et al. (2019) proposed an integrated decision-making planning approach for a better integration of R²ES in the distribution network. The complexity of urban planning leads to the development of new tools and methodologies. Until now, operation was poorly integrated in the design phase. New urban building energy modeling tools were proposed by the different authors. These tools are either based on co-simulations or integrated solutions to be able to capture the fine dynamics of a district. The difficulty of generating the input data for the models was also discussed. Regarding the methodology, most articles proposed a two-stage optimization procedure to optimize both the operational and design aspects. Mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) and genetic algorithms were often used to find optimal solutions.

This book sets down the fundamentals of the theory and measurement of building ventilation and describes the various techniques for predicting and measuring ventilation. It addresses both envelope flows and internal air motion. The first part of the book is primarily concerned with physical descriptions and theoretical models: starting with an overview of the basic mechanisms and characteristics of envelope flows, it then addresses the treatment of the flow characteristics of individual openings and mathematical models for complete building envelopes. Theories for internal air motion are then discussed in detail: mechanisms of mass transport in terms of air motion and age distribution, primary air flows in isolation, resulting flows in enclosed spaces, and flows through large internal openings. The second part, concerned with measurement techniques both at full scale and at model scale, begins with techniques for determining flow characteristics of envelope openings. The use of tracer gases in the study of age distribution and ventilation efficiency is dealt with in detail. Scale modelling for investigating both envelope flows and internal motions is also addressed. The final chapter deals with Computational Fluid Dynamics, since one of its main applications is an alternative to conventional experimental techniques. Natural ventilation is re-emerging as an alternative to mechanical systems in some commercial buildings and both natural and mechanical ventilation are dealt with in detail.
