The purpose of the present study is to explore the induction of beginning teachers in a Hong Kong secondary school. Four beginning teachers and the teacher in charge of teacher induction were chosen as informants. This research was qualitative in approach. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews with each informant individually. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed through reduction procedures such as categorization and identification. The findings matched the studies on beginning teachers done elsewhere. In the first year of teaching, the beginning teachers encountered difficulties related to personal, classroom teaching, administrative and support structure and relationships. Apart from indicating needs and concerns upon these four aspects, the beginning teachers adopted three coping strategies in order to meet the challenges. The strategies included discussion with others, adjusting attitudes and adjusting methods. Without the aids of pre-service teacher training and systematic mentoring, the beginning teachers could merely develop their capacity on their own ivin their first year of teaching. The dissertation concluded with suggestions on systematic mentoring that should be implemented by school administrators, government and educational authorities to help beginning teachers feel competent in their new profession. In addition, it also argued that school culture was crucial for the induction of beginning teachers. By understanding beginning teachers' induction, more effective induction supports at school level and system level could be proposed as viable assistance for beginning teachers. v DOI: 10.5353/th_b2759796 Subjects: First year teachers - In-service training - China - Hong Kong

Examining the Teacher Induction Process in Contemporary Education Systems
Author: Öztürk, Mustafa
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1522552294
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 395
Book Description
Before today’s teachers are ready to instruct the intellectual leaders of tomorrow, they must first be trained themselves. Every teacher experiences an induction process that can make their early years as an educator nerve-racking. Focusing on this period of time in a teacher’s career can lead to greater teacher retention and success. Examining the Teacher Induction Process in Contemporary Education Systems addresses the construct of teacher induction through theoretical and empirical research. It also provides an in-depth conceptualization of being a novice teacher through micro-political realities of teaching in different geographical and cultural regions. While highlighting topics including adaptation challenges, mentor-mentee interaction, and teacher retention, this book is ideally designed for school administrators, early career teachers, educational researchers, educational professionals, and academicians seeking current research on early career educator adaptation and practices.
