Book Description
For those of us who are afraid we don't have what it takes to face our fears on our own, this story reminds us we have the skills and power to do so no matter how big and scary the problem, or monster, is. Most people think martial arts are for self-defense. While this is true, the art of Jiu-Jitsu also teaches us to have respect for ourselves and others. With this mutual respect, we can, through our actions, learn from one another. In this story, a child remembers how to use Jiu-Jitsu she knows to face her bedtime fear of monsters being under the bed. In so doing she remembers the real reason she learned this martial art, gains new friends through earning their respect, and teaches them the right way to go to sleep.

Book Description
Fluidized Bed Boilers: Design and Application attempts to address the need for a single source of information covering all major areas of fluidized bed boiler design and operation. It is based on the International Workshop on Design and Operation of Atmospheric Pressure Fluidized Bed Boilers, organized by the Center for Energy Studies, Technical University of Nova Scotia in Halifax on 24-45 June 1983. The volume begins by presenting a simplified approach to the design of a fluidized bed boiler and an overview of problems in fluidized-bed combustion (FBC). These are followed by separate chapters on the equations and concepts needed to estimate key hydrodynamic parameters; the key factors and terms to be considered in selecting FBC for specific applications; and principles in the design of air distributors for a fluidized bed boiler. Subsequent chapters discuss heat transfer to surfaces in fluidized beds; the pollution control of fluidized bed combustion of solid fuels; and materials selection in atmospheric fluidized bed combustion systems. The final two chapters are devoted to applications. These include the operational and performance results of TVA’s 20-MW Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Combustion (AFBC) Pilot Plant in Kentucky; and the performance of Canada's first commercial FBC boiler plant, located at CFB Summerside, PEI.

Book Description
For centuries, physical models have been used to investigate complex hydraulic problems. Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) stated, "I will treat of such a subject. But first of all, 1 shall make a few experiments and then demonstrate why bodies are forced to act in this matter. " Even with the current advancements of mathematical numerical models, certain complex three-dimensional flow phenomena must still rely on physical model studies. Mathematical models cannot provide adequate solutions if physical processes involved are not completely known. Physical models are particularly attractive to investigate phenomena-involved sediment movements because many three-dimensional sediment processes are still unclear at this stage. Theoretically, there are numerous factors governing movable bed processes and it is nearly impossible to design model studies to obey all the model criteria. Sometimes, appropriate lightweight materials are difficult or too costly to obtain. Often, distorted models are used due to the limitation of available space and the requirement for greater vertical flow depth to investigate vertical differences of various parameters. The turbulence level in the model may also be maintained at a sufficient level to reproduce a similar flow pattern in the prototype. Frequently, engineers are forced to employ distorted models that cannot be designed to satisfy all governing criteria correctly. Thus each hydraulic laboratory has developed its own rules for model testing and a great deal of experience is needed to interpret model results.

Book Description
Heat Exchange of Tubular Surfaces in a Bubbling Boiling Bed bridges the gap surrounding the study of a boiling bed of large particles with smooth and ribbed pipes, as well as pipe bundles. The book's authors combine results from experimental studies with their varied practical experience in fields of boiling bed applications across various disciplines such as chemical, pharmacological, metallurgical and power engineering industries. This book provides readers with a deep practical understanding of how to calculate the heat engineering parameters of ribbed pipe bundles in a boiling bed, along with the hydrodynamics of the boiling bed.Researchers and experts involved in the design, development and operation of boiling bed apparatus will follow step-by-step methods and procedures to gain knowledge of the hydrodynamic and heat exchange elements of the boiling bed which can be applied to their own settings. The effect of gas velocity, size and properties of the dispersed material, the geometric characteristics of the pipe bundle is also presented, alongside data on the effect of high temperature and high pressure of gas in a dispersed system on heat exchange intensity. Covers the design of apparatus and devices with a boiling bed in various industries Includes criteria equations for calculating heat exchange, as well as data for the calculation of furnace devices Presents the structure analysis of the boiling bed with submerged pipe bundles and the calculation of the hydrodynamic resistance of the boiling bed

Book Description
This open access book surveys the development of OCAC technology in the last decade for solid fuel conversion in fluidized beds. The scientific concerns, including combustion and emission characteristics, ash-related problems, OC aging, and so on, are summarized and analyzed. Beyond this, new concepts like OCAC with Oxy-PFBC, OCAC coupled with staged fuel conversion, OCAC in rotatory kilns and multi-functional OCAC are proposed, so as to promote the applications of OCAC to various fields in the future. Moreover, this book also outlines the perspectives for future research and development of OCAC. As an emerging technology, extensive studies and investigations are still necessary to fill in the gap from the fundamental understanding of the technology to its industrial demonstrations. Nevertheless, we believe that this book provides novel insights for the readership of energy and combustion and stimulate meaningful follow-on research on OCAC technology.
