Book Description
“A page-turning book that spans a century of worker strikes.... Engrossing, character-driven, panoramic.” —The New York Times Book Review We live in an era of soaring corporate profits and anemic wage gains, one in which low-paid jobs and blighted blue-collar communities have become a common feature of our nation’s landscape. Behind these trends lies a little-discussed problem: the decades-long decline in worker power. Award-winning journalist and author Steven Greenhouse guides us through the key episodes and trends in history that are essential to understanding some of our nation’s most pressing problems, including increased income inequality, declining social mobility, and the concentration of political power in the hands of the wealthy few. He exposes the modern labor landscape with the stories of dozens of American workers, from GM employees to Uber drivers to underpaid schoolteachers. Their fight to take power back is crucial for America’s future, and Greenhouse proposes concrete, feasible ways in which workers’ collective power can be—and is being—rekindled and reimagined in the twenty-first century. Beaten Down, Worked Up is a stirring and essential look at labor in America, poised as it is between the tumultuous struggles of the past and the vital, hopeful struggles ahead. Beaten Down
Author: David Peterson del Mar
Publisher: University of Washington Press
ISBN: 0295800453
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
Selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2003 The word “violence” conjures up images of terrorism, bombings, and lynchings. Beaten Down is concerned with more prosaic acts of physical force—a husband slapping his wife, a parent taking a birch branch to a child, a pair of drunken friends squaring off to establish who was the “better man.” David Peterson del Mar accounts for the social relations of power that lie behind this intimate form of violence, this “white noise” that has always been with us, humming quietly between more explosive acts of violence. Broad in its chronological and cultural sweep, Beaten Down examines interpersonal violence in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia beginning with Native American cultures before colonization and continuing into the mid-twentieth century. It contrasts the disparate ways of practicing and punishing interpersonal violence on each side of the U.S.-Canadian border. Del Mar concludes that we cannot comprehend the causes and moral consequences of a violent act without considering larger social relations of power, whether between colonizers and original inhabitants, between spouses, between parents and children, or between and among different ethnic groups. The author has drawn on a vast array of vivid sources, including newspaper accounts, autobiographies, novels, oral histories, historical and ethnographic publications, and hundreds of detailed court cases to account for not only the relative frequency of different forms of violence, but also the shifting definitions and perceptions of what constitutes violence. This is a thoughtful and probing account of how and why people have hit each other and the manner in which opinion makers and ordinary citizens have censured, defended, or celebrated such acts. Del Mar’s conclusions have important implications for an understanding of violence and perceptions of violence in contemporary society.

Beaten Down By Blood
Author: Michele Bomford
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1921941952
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 346
Book Description
Beaten Down by Blood: The Battle of Mont St Quentin-Peronne 1918 charts an extraordinary journey from the trenches facing Mont St Quentin on 31 August 1918 through the frenetic phases of the battle until the final objectives are taken on 5 September. This is the story, often told in the words of the men themselves, of the capture of the ‘unattackable’ Mont and the ‘invincible’ fortress town of Péronne, two of the great feats of Australian forces in the First World War. The Author places real men on the battlefield, describing their fears and their courage and their often violent deaths. The struggle for control of the battle, to site the guns, to bridge the Somme and maintain communications are portrayed in vivid detail. The story also offers a glimpse of the men’s families at home, their anxiety and their life-long grief.

Book Description
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Some workers, like Jorge Porras, were not paid for the hours they worked. When they complained, their employer fired them. #2 Laura Fox, an elementary school music teacher in Phoenix, Arizona, was having a hard time making ends meet. She took a twenty-hour-a-week job at McDonald’s. #3 Something is fundamentally wrong in the way many American employers treat their workers. Too often, they fail to show workers basic respect, and they fail to heed workers’ most fundamental concerns. #4 American workers have been frustrated with their stagnant wages and shuttered factories, and this was a major reason behind Trump’s victory in the 2016 election. Trump has continued to undermine labor unions and workers’ rights.

Beat Up, Beat Down and Still Standing

Book Description
Everybody has a story. When I was 21 years old, I thought I should write my life story. Why? Because I believed that I had experienced so much as a young woman, and to me, I had seen it all. Being raised in a loving church, being on TV, attending the Grammy's and music award shows, etc., little did I know that I would end up using drugs and being involved with someone who would beat me as a sport until he was satisfied. And when that satisfaction needed more fuel, the beatings escalated to threats of death. This book has been hard to get out of me. Some things are absolutely too painful or shameful for me, but here I share in-depth; so that you, my readers, may know that you, too, can overcome your past and that you are not alone. I share a lot of my entire life, my family, and events that played major roles in my life. The title, Beat Up, Beat Down and STILL STANDING, has a REAL meaning to me. I have literally been beat up, with black eyes, busted head, bumps and bruises to prove it. Beat down, well, that's a term I've used for the legal system that let me down beginning in 1986 through THE PRESENT-I'm STILL waiting on my pardon. At the time of my arrest, there was no law to protect me against someone who said he was going to kill me (now it's called a terrorist threat). From then till now, "I'm still standing," and having done all to stand, I STAND. I write this book also for several additional reasons: 1) I desire inmates to be empowered through my story and gain hope for their lives life, contributing members of society. 3) I want society to know from the pages of this book and my personal experience that the legal system can fail, and if they have a loved one locked up, not to give up on them or the legal system-because all things are possible: 4) to wake up the effects of domestic violence and to bring awareness to this issue. 5) to literally show the process of "a life saved by grace" and how I "walked it out in."
