Motivated by the proliferation of user-generated product-review information and its widespreaduse, this note studies a market where consumers are heterogeneous in terms of their willingness-to-pay for a new product. Each consumer observes the binary reviews (like or dislike) of consumers who purchased the product in the past and uses Bayesian updating to infer the product quality. We show that the learning process is successful as long as the price is not prohibitive and therefore at least some consumers, with sufficiently high idiosyncratic willingness-to-pay, will purchase the product irrespective of their posterior quality estimate. We examine some structural properties of the dynamics of the posterior beliefs.Finally, we study the seller's pricing problem, and we show that, if the set of possible prices is finite, then a stationary optimal pricing policy exists. If putting one item on the market involves a constant cost, then under this optimal policy, learning fails with positive probability.

We introduce a modified conditional logit model that takes account of uncertainty associated with mis-reporting in revealed preference experiments estimating willingness-to-pay (WTP). Like Hausman et al. [Journal of Econometrics (1988) Vol. 87, pp. 239-269], our model captures the extent and direction of uncertainty by respondents. Using a Bayesian methodology, we apply our model to a choice modelling (CM) data set examining UK consumer preferences for non-pesticide food. We compare the results of our model with the Hausman model. WTP estimates are produced for different groups of consumers and we find that modified estimates of WTP, that take account of mis-reporting, are substantially revised downwards. We find a significant proportion of respondents mis-reporting in favour of the non-pesticide option. Finally, with this data set, Bayes factors suggest that our model is preferred to the Hausman model.

This book focuses on the structural analysis of demand under block rate pricing, a type of nonlinear pricing used mainly in public utility services. In this price system, consumers are presented with several unit prices, which makes a naive analysis biased. However, the response to the price schedule is often of interest in economics and plays an important role in policymaking. To address this issue, the book adopts a structural approach, referred to as the discrete/continuous choice approach in the literature, to develop corresponding statistical models for analysis. The resulting models are extensions of the Tobit model, a well-known statistical model in econometrics, and their hierarchical structure fits well in Bayesian methodology. Thus, the book takes the Bayesian approach and develops the Markov chain Monte Carlo method to conduct statistical inferences. The methodology derived is then applied to real-world datasets, microdata collected in Tokyo and the neighboring Chiba Prefecture, as a useful empirical analysis for prediction as well as policymaking.

The goal of better understanding consumers and making better marketing decisions drives development of new research methods and modification of existing ones. Both experimental consumer research and marketing modeling areas have been working toward this goal. However, there has been limited exchange of conceptual and methodological developments between the fields. We believe that integrating knowledge of contextual effects from psychology and consumer behavior with mathematical rigor of modeling would benefit the field of marketing research. It will allow researchers to uncover relationships that are difficult, if not impossible, to find with just one approach. We present two cases that demonstrate methodological and substantive benefits of this interaction. In the first essay, we bring psychological research literature into modeling consumer choices. In the second essay, we demonstrate how statistical methodology can be applied to mediation analysis commonly used in behavioral research. We show how adherence to the likelihood-based approach provides a common ground for this interaction. The results show that this merging of expertise has practical and methodological implications: the best performing proposed choice model in the first essay changes inferences about consumer preferences from what is concluded by traditional models; and conclusions about the presence of mediating mechanisms presented in the second essay could differ from results of the traditional methods.
