This volume contains articles describing research on the basic, pre-clinical and clinical neuroscience of the basal ganglia written by attendees of the 10th Triennial Meeting of the International Basal Ganglia Society (IBAGS) that was held June 20-24th, 2010 at the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch, New Jersey, USA. For each of the preceding 9 IBAGS meetings, the meeting proceedings were published conventionally as a volume in the Advances in Behavioral Biology series. These volumes were expensive, were published only in very small quantities, had very limited availability to both basal ganglia researchers and the general neuroscience community, were not available on-line and the articles contained in each were not indexed in online searchable databases. Now, for the first time, IBAGS is taking full advantage of modern innovations in scientific publication and publishing IBAGS X as a Research Topics issue of Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. The issue will be available on-line and is fully indexed by searchable databases including PubMed. Articles will include reports on the latest research on the anatomy and neurophysiology of single neurons and functional circuitry in the striatum, globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus and substantia nigra as well as the latest data on animal models of basal ganglia dysfunction as well as behavioral and clinical studies in human patients.

Childen's palliative care has developed rapidly as a discipline, as health care professionals recognize that the principles of adult palliative care may not always be applicable to children at the end of life. The unique needs of dying children are particularly evident across Africa, where the scale of the problem is overwhelming, and the figures so enormous that they are barely comprehensible: over 400,000 children in Africa died from AIDS in 2003, and out of the 166,000 children a year diagnosed with cancer, 85% of these are in the developing world. Despite the enormous need, provision of children's palliative care in Africa is almost non-existent, with very few health workers trained and confident to provide care for dying children. The challenges of providing palliative care in this setting are different to those in more developed countries, contending with the shortage of physical and human resources in addition to the vast scope of the care needed. Written by a group with wide experience of caring for dying children in Africa, this book provides practical, realistic guidance by improving access to, and delivery of, palliative care in this demanding setting. It looks at the themes common to palliative care--including communication, assessment, symptom management, psychosocial issues, ethical dilemmas, end of life care, and tips for the professional on compassion and conservation of energy--but always retains the focus on the particular needs of the health care professional in Africa. While containing some theory, the emphasis is on practical action throughout the book. The sixth course of the School, entitled "Advances in Applications, Biological Effects, and Dosimetry of Ultrasound," provided an in-depth review of all facets of ultra sound interactions and their biological effects on living systems, allowing an assessment of the hazard potential of the various applications of ultra sound. Particular reference was made to possible health risks associated with medical ultrasound exposure since this use is by far the most prevalent. Since the initial application of ultrasound to submarine detection, medical diagnostic and therapeutic applications have become predominant over the past 20 years. The question of safety of this physical agent is an extremely important one. In many industrialized countries most pregnant women receive at least one diagnostic ultrasound examination before the birth of the child. Thus, potential hazards to the fetus are of prime concern. This problem has been aggravated by the fact that the medical diagnostic applications of ultrasound have far outpaced research efforts on biological effects. A further compounding factor of concern to clinicians and scientists has been the use of higher and higher intensities by the manufacturers of ultrasound equipment, particularly higher peak pulse intensities.
