In her poignant autobiography, author Joan Tollifson encourages readers to look for themselves without clinging to old opinions or relying on outside authorities. Honest, funny, and profound, this is a book that invites readers to discover who or what they really are.

Book Description
In an increasingly diverse society, it is essential that medicine be aware of matters of difference. Medical humanities programs promote awareness of the social aspects of medicine, and the Association of American Medical Colleges has recently instituted cultural competencies for clinical interaction for the training of medical students. Yet these efforts to impart understanding of the cross-cultural aspects of medicine are still hindered by a significant limitation: within a medical system whose currency is diagnosis, difference is primarily defined through disease. This special issue of Literature and Medicine focuses on difference and identity in the context of disease and disability. The articles collected here explore the complex ways in which notions of disease, disability, and difference are related and in which bodies marked by gender, race, disability, sexuality, and ethnic identities experience disease in specific ways. The essays take a humanities-based approach to the subject and emphasize an awareness and sensitivity to difference through forms of symbolic representation such as metaphor and narrative. This volume provides a heuristic lens through which relationships between individual expressions of identity and communal experiences of difference can be considered. Each article speaks to the process whereby individual stories and strategies shape, and are in turn shaped by, the institutions they seek to transform. Literature and Medicine is devoted to exploring interfaces between literary and medical knowledge and understanding. The journal showcases the creative and critical work of renowned physician-writers, leading literary scholars, and medical humanists.

Book Description
If you move into the deepest teachings of any great spiritual tradition, at some point you must move beyond the tradition itself and any idea of enlightenment. What is it that remains when the spiritual path, and even enlightenment, is transcended? Dismantling the Fantasy is a consideration of the movement out of thought itself. This may sound extreme or even impossible, but again it is a simple consideration of your potential as a human being, and you can easily understand it from the life experience you already have.

Book Description
This Book Is Simple, Yet Complete. Secrets for Success is a book I've wanted to write for a decade. Who is this Meditation Book For? If you want to learn basic meditation, or progress further - this book is for you. Feel free to write me directly and ask any questions you have as you practice. If you want to learn from a book that is free from religious bias and undertones - this book is for you. If you want to use meditation to either relax, or reach the amazing states of jhana - this book is for you. Jhanas are a series of mind-states that occur during meditation when the mind is focused and thought has stopped. There is nothing to compare these states of mind to, they are unlike anything you've ever experienced. Much more about them later! If you have been a monk in the past, or some other serious student of meditation and you have yet to be able to experience the higher levels of meditation - this book is for you. Please download and read the preview of this comprehensive meditation book for free! Review by Paul Garrigan:"Vern Lovic is not afraid to tackle these special states of consciousness that fall into the category of jhanas. He not only describes them, but he also provides a path for people to experience these states for themselves. Most non-spiritual meditation manuals will completely ignore the jhanas - probably because these altered states of consciousness tend to have religious connotations. The spiritual books, on the other hand, can give the impression that the jhanas are very mysterious, maybe even dangerous, and not really within reach of beginner meditators. Vern spends a great deal of time discussing the jhanas. He claims that if you follow his approach, you will be able to experience these states while meditating for as little as twenty-minutes per day."Book Review by David Collett:In business there are many books written on what we should all be doing to improve; yet many of the authors are simply writers who have not created a successful business themselves. If you went and spent time with the author, you won't see them running a successful business. For me there is no difference in the way I observe Vern behave or speak in person compared with what he writes about on meditation. That is very important. In chapter 1, Vern covers twelve areas where he feels there has been a change in his life since he started meditating on the breath. The twelve areas he identifies from his own direct experience can all be described as a change in attitude and/or a change in the way he emotionally responds to external events as well as what is happening internally. Just those changes alone, ignoring the Jhanas completely, help to explain where the motivation comes from to want to write about meditation and to share it with others. The activity is so innocent, quick and costless yet provides such large dividends across many areas, when one begins to realize some of the benefits, it is hard not to want to share it with others, so at least they could try it themselves if they want to.That's the feeling I get with Vern. He knows from his own experience that simply spending some time with the breath each day completely and unexpectedly changed his life for the better. If you found a small money tree in a forest somewhere that grew leaves of $100 notes and it only produced two per day, it is likely you wouldn't tell anyone about it. You would keep it to yourself. If that same little tree was producing 400 to 500 $100 notes a day, in time you would realize there is too much just for you. You would want to tell others about it. That's a little how good meditation feels. It feels really good and you just wonder to yourself why more people aren't doing it.
