Book Description
Almost two decades ago, by using random coding bound arguments, it was proved that considerable progress in the power efficiency of digital communication could be obtained by treating coding and modulation as a single entity. These ideas were carried further in the manifestation of Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) techniques. Sine then, the idea of TCM has expanded greatly beyond the type of schemes originally presented, and has given way to a considerable amount of research activity, both theoretical and applied, and to the implementation of several TCM techniques in new generations of modems. Block-Coded Modulation (BCM) was discovered at about the same time as TCM, and is currently attracting considerable interest as a possible alternative to TCM for some applications. A thorough overview on both kinds of coded modulation is discussed in this volume. It assesses the status and the prospects of coded modulation and of bandwidth-efficient transmission, shedding light on the future avenue of theory and applications in these exciting areas.

Book Description
A text providing insight into the fundamantal problems and solutions found in modern personal communications: service requirements, coverage problems, fundamental interference, cellular architectures and signalling, network management, data and supplementary services, and satellite services. Also describes the approach of the GSM methodology to some of these problems, although the same principles apply to DCS 1800 and other technologies. This volume builds on and updates a 1991 IEE text, Personal and Mobile Radio Systems by the same editor. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Description
The New Mexico State University Center for Space Telemetering and Telecommunications systems has been, and is currently, engaged in the investigation of trellis-coded modulation (TCM) communication systems. In particular, TCM utilizing M-ary phase shift keying is being studied. The study of carrier synchronization in a TCM environment, or in MPSK systems in general, has been one of the two main thrusts of this grant. This study has involved both theoretical modelling and software simulation of the carrier synchronization problem. Book Description
The capacity of wireless data communications is lagging behind demands due to unsatisfactory performance of the existing wireless networks, such as low data rates, low spectral efficiency and low quality of service. Space-time coding is an effective transmit diversity technique to combat fading in wireless communications. Space-time codes are a highly bandwidth-efficient approach to signalling within wireless communication that takes advantage of the spatial dimension by transmitting a number of data streams using multiple co-located antennas. There are various approaches to the coding structures, including space-time trellis coded modulation, space-time turbo codes and also layered architectures. The central issue in all these various coding structures is the exploitation of multipath effects in order to achieve very high spectral efficiencies. The spectral efficiencies of traditional wireless systems range between 1-5bps/sec/Hz but by using space-time techniques spectral efficiencies of 20-40bps/sec/Hz have been possible. Hence, space-time coding enables an increase in capacity by an order of magnitude. This is the main reason why space-time codes have been included in the standards for the third generation wireless communication systems and ultimately why Space-time Coding will be in great demand by individuals within industry and academia. The comprehensive understanding of space-time coding is essential in the implementation of 3G, and as the only title currently available, Space-Time Coding will be the standard text for Researchers, telecommunication engineers and network planners, academics and undergraduate/postgraduate students, telecommunications managers and consultants.

Book Description
The basic concatenated coding system for the space telemetry channel consists of a Reed-Solomon (RS) outer code, a symbol interleaver/deinterleaver, and a bandwidth efficient trellis inner code. A block diagram of this configuration is shown. The system may operate with or without the outer code and interleaver. In this recommendation, the outer code remains the (255,223) RS code over GF(2 exp 8) with an error correcting capability of t = 16 eight bit symbols. This code's excellent performance and the existence of fast, cost effective, decoders justify its continued use. The purpose of the interleaver/deinterleaver is to distribute burst errors out of the inner decoder over multiple codewords of the outer code. This utilizes the error correcting capability of the outer code more efficiently and reduces the probability of an RS decoder failure. Since the space telemetry channel is not considered bursty, the required interleaving depth is primarily a function of the inner decoding method. A diagram of an interleaver with depth 4 that is compatible with the (255,223) RS code is shown. Specific interleaver requirements are discussed after the inner code recommendations.
