Book Description
Excerpt from Balzac and the Short-Story The reference to Caleb Williams, in Balzac's preface, is significant. He is correct in ascribing to Godwin's novel the interest that rests upon a vivid presentation of one situation; from beginning to end the attention is fastened upon the relations of Williams and the man who is first his patron and then his persecutor, Falkland, and, throughout, the action is based upon the unconfessed crime of the latter. The following comment in Godwin's preface shows how he himself valued the effect of such a structure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from After-Dinner Stories From Balzac The street itself is a charming accessory. It has that suggestion of moss-grown tran quillity that the clatter of a sabot accentu ates, and in wandering through it any imag inative loiterer might fancy himself in the mouldering avenue of a forgotten town. But to return to the point, or rather to the house. In it lives a gentleman and with him a mem ory and a library. The gentleman himself may be spared any personalities. The mem ory which he cultivates is that of Balzac, while the library contains very nearly every thing that is in any way connected with the history and works of the French realist. Book Description
This is one of Balzac's best stories, about a man who keeps two households. The story begins with a chaste and lovely needlewoman called Caroline who spends her days by the window of a run-down house in a seedy part of Paris. A gloomy young man passes by each day and inevitably he notices her and begins to take an interest in her despite his depression. One day he sees that she is desperately short of money and throws his purse in through the window, and after that there's a picnic. One thing leads to another, and he sets her up in a charming house where she lives contentedly and bears him a couple of children. Her mother, a rather crafty old woman, falls ill before long and there's a splendid scene where three old biddies and her servant are all waiting for her to die so that they can get their hands on her money. On her death-bed she reveals the name of the man whose mistress her daughter is...

Book Description
The plot for At the Sign of the Cat and Racket, if such a stately name can be given to so delicate a sketch, is of course open to downright British judgment to pronounce the self-sacriiice of Lebas more ignoblethan touching, the conduct of Théodore too childish to deserve the excuses sometimes possible for passionate inconstancy, and the character of Augustine angelically idiotic. The candew adorable which the Frenchman adores and exhibits in the girl the uncompromising, though mortal, passion of the woman are too different from any ideal that we have entertained, except for a very short period in the eighteenth century. Le Bal de Sceaux, with its satire on contempt for trade, is in some ways more like Balzacs young friend and pupil Charles de Bernard than like himself and I believe it attracted English notice pretty early. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work.
