Book Description
'What's Mine and Yours is a book about parents who try and fail and then try again. An extraordinary cast of characters, nuanced and full of insight. Read this book.' -ANGIE CRUZ, author of Dominicana In the Piedmont of North Carolina, two families' paths become unexpectedly intertwined over twenty years. Jade and Lacey May are two mothers determined to give their children the opportunities they never had. After a harrowing loss, Jade wants to hand down the tools her son, Gee, will need to survive in America as a sensitive young Black man. Meanwhile, Lacey May, having left the husband she loves, strives to protect her three half-Latina daughters from their charming father's influence. When a county initiative draws students from the largely Black east side of town into a predominantly white high school on the west, each mother stands on different sides of the integration debate. Gee meets Lacey May's daughter Noelle during the school play, and their families begin to form deeply knotted, messy ties that will shape the trajectory of their adult lives. And their mothers make choices that will haunt them for decades to come. What's Mine and Yours is an expansive yet intimate multigenerational tapestry of motherhood, identity, and the legacies we inherit. It explores the unique organism that is every family: what breaks them apart and how they come back together.

Book Description
During the nineteenth century, there were repeated efforts in the United States to make a uniform textbook of Christian doctrine that all Catholics might be able to use. In 1829, the bishops assembled in the First Provincial Council of Baltimore to discuss the matter. They recommended using St. Bellarmine's catechism as a model. Finally, in the Third Plenary Council (1884), the Baltimore catechism in its present form took shape. This fourth volume (No. 4) is meant to be used as a reference work, or as a teacher's manual for the original Baltimore Catechisms. It is often used as an advanced textbook for explaining many of the basic questions people have about the Faith. There are also prayers given for suitable occasions. The source text for this work is: An explanation of the Baltimore Catechism of Christian doctrine: for the use of Sunday-school teachers and advanced classes, New York Benziger, 1921 by Thomas L Kinkead. Illustrations have been added to this text to illuminate the topics and persons referred to in the catechism.

Book Description
The definitive account of the lynching of twenty-three-year-old Matthew Williams in Maryland, the subsequent investigation, and the legacy of "modern-day" lynchings. On December 4, 1931, a mob of white men in Salisbury, Maryland, lynched and set ablaze a twenty-three-year-old Black man named Matthew Williams. His gruesome murder was part of a wave of silent white terrorism in the wake of the stock market crash of 1929, which exposed Black laborers to white rage in response to economic anxieties. For nearly a century, the lynching of Matthew Williams has lived in the shadows of the more well-known incidents of racial terror in the deep South, haunting both the Eastern Shore and the state of Maryland as a whole. In The Silent Shore, author Charles L. Chavis Jr. draws on his discovery of previously unreleased investigative documents to meticulously reconstruct the full story of one of the last lynchings in Maryland. Bringing the painful truth of anti-Black violence to light, Chavis breaks the silence that surrounded Williams's death. Though Maryland lacked the notoriety for racial violence of Alabama or Mississippi, he writes, it nonetheless was the site of at least 40 spectacle lynchings after the abolition of slavery in 1864. Families of lynching victims rarely obtained any form of actual justice, but Williams's death would have a curious afterlife: Maryland's politically ambitious governor Albert C. Ritchie would, in an attempt to position himself as a viable challenger to FDR, become one of the first governors in the United States to investigate the lynching death of a Black person. Ritchie tasked Patsy Johnson, a member of the Pinkerton detective agency and a former prizefighter, with going undercover in Salisbury and infiltrating the mob that murdered Williams. Johnson would eventually befriend a young local who admitted to participating in the lynching and who also named several local law enforcement officers as ringleaders. Despite this, a grand jury, after hearing 124 witness statements, declined to indict the perpetrators. But this denial of justice galvanized Governor Ritchie's Interracial Commission, which would become one of the pioneering forces in the early civil rights movement in Maryland. Complicating historical narratives associated with the history of lynching in the city of Salisbury, The Silent Shore explores the immediate and lingering effect of Williams's death on the politics of racism in the United States, the Black community in Salisbury, the broader Eastern Shore, the state of Maryland, and the legacy of "modern-day lynchings."

Book Description
Lost Baltimore is the latest in the series from Anova Books that traces the cherished places in a city that time, progress and fashion have swept aside before the National Register of Historic Places could save them from the wrecker's ball.Organised chronologically starting with the earliest losses and ending with the latest, the book features much-loved Philadelphia insitutions that failed to stand the test of time, such as the Sun Iron Building, Electric Amusement Park and the Rennert Hotel.Grand buildings erected in the Victorian era that were too costly to be refurbished, or movie theaters that the age of television made redundant are featured. Alongside the city's iconic and much-missed buildings, Lost Baltimore also looks at some traditions that have passed (marble doorsteps, painted window screens) and sporting legends that have relocated (Baltimore Colts, Baltimore Bullets).Lost Baltimore is a nostalgic journey back in time to visit some of the lost treasures that the city let slip through its grasp.
